Tax Day: Are you paying or getting a refund?
First time in years I get a refund. I'm self-employed so I try to underpay and cut a check today...but I overpaid one quarter so I gave the government a loan for six months.

HOWEVER, a check back seems like free money. So I totally have to blow it on something stupid.

2. I'm supposed to be getting a refund,
though it's not much.

Isn't there an IRS site to track your paperwork or refund?

6. I think the OP means "paying by sending a check with your return"
Edited on Mon Apr-18-11 12:03 PM by Bill McBlueState
It's a little ambiguous, though.

One thing's for certain; the IRS will *not* like it if you enter $75,000 on line 76 of the 1040!

10. Got a refund ...
Something like $5k. Still, I'm pissed. That's like loaning $5,000 to the government interest-free over the course of the year.

12. neither - though i 'should' get over $2000 in EIC
Student loans in default cuz of unemployment, no deferrment left, so they take my tax refund and put it towards my debt. What sucks is that it Earned Income Credit...if i am poor enough to qualify for that, shouldn;t i get it? you think I might need it more ...?

fuckers. I am filing late because i could give a shit if they get their 'payment' or not. wish i could just ignore them...

13. I'm getting a federal refund of $70.
I owed the state exactly $1, but they say not to bother with amounts less than or equal to $1.00.

My wife and I set up our W4s to roughly break even at tax time. I don't see much value in getting a refund, thus letting the government keep our money all year interest-free.

17. For the first time in many years (I don't remember how
long it's been), I am receiving a refund of $965 in federal and $662 from the state. I e-filed through Tax Act and just hope there is no mistake. Last year I had to pay $800. It must be because I retired (forced by layoff) in 2010. I received $10,000 in severance pay, and I have been getting social security and unemployment. I guess being in a lower income bracket pays off sometimes.

23. We got refunds, strangely.
Both self-employed but made very little. We owed self-employment tax but it was covered by the Making Work Pay and earned income credit.

28. biggest refund ever . . .
paid 2009 r/e taxes and 2010 r/e taxes in 2010 so i could claim both this year. got make work credit, sales tax credit and energy credit for new metal roof on my condo. plus i put almost the max tax deferred $ into my ira. kept track of my eligible donations. so i will probably get audited. :eyes:

29. If you're self-employed, the smart thing to do is to apply any over-payment to
next year's estimated tax.
