Michele Bachmann: God told me to sponsor an anti-gay amendment

During a Monday stop in early caucus state Iowa, Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann explained that God had told her to sponsor an amendment to the Minnesota Constitution outlawing gay marriage.

At the event, sponsored by Bob Vander Plaats' Christian conservative group The Family Leader, Bachmann, who has yet to declare her candidacy for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination, reminded attendees at the group's most recent presidential lecture series installment that she opposes gay marriage.

The Republican as a state senator twice spearheaded unsuccessful efforts in Minnesota to constitutionally ban gay marriage.

Bachmann said she was “devastated” by the 2003 Massachusetts Supreme Court decision that legalized the institution in that state. .............(more)

12. She reminds me more of the pharisees
and sadducees that Christ called hypocrites:

Matthew 23:2-33

2 “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. 3 So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. 4 They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.
...
...

Seven Woes on the Teachers of the Law and the Pharisees

13 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.

15 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell as you are.

16 “Woe to you, blind guides! You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the....

....

29 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous. 30 And you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ 31 So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets. 32 Go ahead, then, and complete what your ancestors started!

33 “You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?

And she knows it. He did, however, mention something about not liking it when people blame Him for their own stuff. . .

Better start walking on coals, Ms. Bachmann, you'll be glad you practiced.

6. I remember a time when anyone saying "God told me to..."
were sent to the local mental health clinic. It's one thing to say "I'm doing The Lord's work" or some such; but to actually claim hearing the voice of God...straight to the straight-jacket; metaphorically speaking.

The last time I ran into the idea that you tolerate that kind of crap was by someone "bending over backwards" to be tolerant of someone's "religious" beliefs.

Not that I don't believe you, just that I'm shocked that kind of idea exists.

23. Wiki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-psychiatry

That's not to say that some points they make are not justified, the way we used to treat the mentally ill was horrific and atrocious (what was that movie with the evil nurse Ratchet? "One Flew Over The Cookoo's Nest"), and I think that our society's cenception of "normal" is too narrow (not suprising given me being on the Autism spectrum), but someone who has voices in his/her head tells the person to do awful things for God, or if the person is so manic that the person is a thread to himself and others, that person has a problem and needs help.

26. Thanks for the info. All this time I never knew it was a whole
"movement." I knew about scientology and I know the usual criticisms of psychiatry; treatment of gays and women and slaves who refused to be happy slaves, but I didn't realize it was used to justify, erm, "different ways of thinking" that included hearing God.

I'd laugh but that's not that funny.

That was in 1972, IIRC.

It now seems that I should have run for public office back when GOD was talkin' to me.

Or if any of these religious right folk who claim to hear the word of a god - are you so sure this is really a being you should choose to worship? All that mean to down right vicious visions they speak of if I thought there really was a creature of some sort communicating it to me I would fight it not obey and worship it.

37. Such hatred and fear is mental illness - she hears the voice she wants to hear
which tells her to feed her hatred.

the racists in the south in the 1960s used the same ploy - using god to justify their ungodly knee-jerk fear and failure to respect the rights of others.

they don't understand the message of jesus, "to do unto others as you would have them do unto you," to "love your neighbor as yourself," (i.e. RESPECT THE RIGHTS OF OTHERS) because they can't speak the language of love and respect. Their god is a false idol - Xenophobia. Their language is babble.
