Internet Explorer 10 Drops Windows Vista Support

By Joseph D. Lien. Monday, 18. April, 18:23

http://my.opera.com/portalnews/blog/2011/04/18/internet-explorer-10-drops-windows-vista-support

Microsoft somewhat recently released its 9th iteration of Internet Explorer, which was an upgrade they desperately needed to stay relevant with IE8 falling far behind the curve in performance and standards support, and a large base of legacy version users (of IE6 and IE7) still about.

While the upgrade was fairly well received by reviewers, one of the worst aspects of this new version is that it does not even run on Windows XP or prior -- when Windows XP is still the world's most popular Operating system.

Clearly, Microsoft is trying to leverage IE9 to change that statistic and encourage Windows users to upgrade. It must make development a bit simpler for them, but most other browser vendors still manage to support Windows 2000 and up, as well as several other non-Microsoft operating systems.

Recently Microsoft has released a preview version of IE10. That was quick, considering the large gaps typically seen between versions of IE in the past. But to add insult to injury, it has also been confirmed that IE10 won't even run on the comparitively modern Windows Vista, requiring Windows 7 (or likely Windows 8, when released) to run. If you try to install IE10 under Windows Vista, the installer gives an error and shuts down.

1. Glad I have a Mac,
Glad I don't use IE.

Why do people keep buying into Microsoft madness, I find it baffling.

11. I have Mac with which I must occasionally run Windows through Parallells

I decided that Boot Camp and VM Fusionware were not options because at 80GB, my 2006 Mac Mini's hard drive was too small to be partitioned.

I also decided that as happy as I was using XP at work, I'd better get a copy of Windows 7 for home -- dropping support of XP was inevitable if only for the sake of saving Microsoft's face.

Unfortunately, I can still remember back when Microsoft had insisted that Vista was on the cutting edge! If people are shying away from Windows 7 because they still haven't recovered from the Vista debacle, then Microsoft has no one to blame but themselves!

3. I've used Firefox since 2006 and say screw IE.
this story makes me use IE only to evade my Firefox AdBlockPlus plugin if a video doesn't work on a site or whatever.

7. Instead of using IE, you might be able to
right click the Adblock icon in Firefox and select "Disable on this page only":

4. Trying to force people to buy Win 7
Fuck that, I'm sticking with Vista. I don't need IE 10 anyway. I hardly ever use IE in the first place.

5. That's lame. There are still a lot of people using XP.
I see it everywhere I go, in offices, stores etc.

I have the IE10 beta on W7. No problems with it for me. I usually use Firefox, though it's still kind of bloated in 4.0.
