Boy, 9, uses CPR to save 2-year-old sister
http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/04/19/arizona.boy.saves.sister/index.html?hpt=T2

Tristin Saghin might only be 9 years old, but he knew just what to do after his 2-year-old sister was found floating in her grandmother's swimming pool unconscious Sunday.

"I went running outside ... and I did CPR on her," the boy told affiliate KNXV in Mesa, Arizona.

While his mother and grandmother frantically called for help, Tristin coolly performed chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

His sister started breathing again, he said, and paramedics soon took it from there. She is going to be OK.

Tristin told the television station that he learned CPR by watching television and that he would do anything for his little sister.

"She's really beautiful," he said. "I love her really much."

10. And if you can afford one, get a portable defibrillator.
I've been suggesting one for our condo association. They can be had for about $1000 bucks.

11. You know I was a huge swimmer when I was a kid, and I had to learn CPR
And I guarantee you if I was ever in a situation where my little sister needed it, I would be freaking out and panicking so much that I doubt I'd even be able to do it properly. Of course EVERYBODY should be taught CPR (it should be taught in elementary school imo), but I can't even imagine being as calm as the kid in the OP.

when you realize you are it.....you can focus on that one task...then fall apart later. I teach CPR and am a school nurse (or was until I will be laid off this year). I had one kid that I taught save her brother the very next weekend. I swear I didn't think any of those 7th graders were listening-but one was.

Even as an instructor, you get butterflies. The thing is focus on the task at hand. You have time to collapse later. They need you to be strong. They are counting on you. I loved his quote..."I love her really much". And I bet he does.

9. Oh, and another thing.
Fuck pools, and people who put them in their homes and don't thoroughly cover them. Fuck them hard.

22. SWIMMING POOLS + YOUNG CHILDREN DON'T MIX.
"This is the third drowning call in the Valley in the last two days.
On Saturday, a 3-year-old girl died after she was found in a family swimming pool around 3:30 p.m. in Mesa.
A few hours later, a 7-year-old girl was pronounced dead after she was found in an above-ground swimming pool in south Phoenix."
http://www.abc15.com/dpp/news/region_southeast_valley/mesa/heroic-boy-tells-how-he-saved-sister

OY.
It takes only a few brief minutes of inattention on the part of adults to end up with a dead kid. This family was VERY lucky that the toddler was found in time.
Swimming pools need to be surrounded with a fence on ALL FOUR sides, with a self-locking gate. That way little ones can't wander out of the house and into the pool.
