Emergency financial manager takes power, raises tempers in Benton Harbor

An emergency financial manager has taken control of most official functions in Benton Harbor, a city in Southwest Michigan.

The emergency financial manager law at the heart of a showdown in the Detroit Public Schools is also raising tensions on the other side of the state, where tempers flared Monday night at the first meeting of the Benton Harbor City Commission since it it was stripped of all power.

The order, issued by emergency financial manager Joseph Harris on Friday, means Benton Harbor officials can only call meetings to order, adjourn them and approve minutes of meetings. The move is believed to be the first of its kind under the new state law.

WNDU.com reported that one attendee at the meeting complained: “He’s not even an elected official and he’s going to fire the mayor? How are you going to fire a mayor?”
