Went to McDonalds hiring day today and applied
So I went to McDonalds hiring day today.... Would have been the same affair any other day of the year. Many others were there. Turned in the application and got a "thanks we'll look at it and call you if you meet what we are looking for" along with the others ahead of me who got the same response.

I've been watching multiple Youtube videos today with local and national coverage of this event. I've noticed the same talking points from every McDonalds manager interviewed (including the CEO). "We are expanding!" "Our business is doing great!" "We need more people to meet the demand!".

At one point the CEO was asked "So are these minimum wage jobs?" to which she responded "We pay WELL above minimum wage".... when pressed she answered the average wage would be $8.30/hour. Minimum wage is $7.25/hour. That qualifies as "WELL above minimum wage"? If they are going to bull shit about something as simple as the wage it makes me wonder what else is going on.

Call me paranoid.... but I would bet this whole affair was dreamed up by the marketing department to convince investors that business is so great they are pulling in money hand over fist in hopes to raise the stock price and gain positive publicity. Not once did I hear anyone interviewed in McDonalds management bring up ANY concern for the well being of their employees. It was all "Business is great!!! See all the people we need to hire?"

Plus I noticed every McDonald's I went to in order to apply today was plastered with "Business is great we are hiring!" signs. Marketing event if I've ever seen one. McDonalds was on damn near every local and national news channel today. Free advertisement. All involved in the marketing department will likely be getting promotions.

23. Investors are usually excited by layoffs
Edited on Tue Apr-19-11 07:24 PM by Canuckistanian
It means the companies are offshoring and thus saving $millions.

Hiring Americans doesn't excite investors.

Oh please, please.... pick me, pick me to work the 11 to 7 where I can be both bored AND in danger from drunks and theives for $8.something an hour!

35. I think a number of them already are operating 24/7, but perhaps
they want to do it at every location? I live in a college town, so I suppose it's not weird at all to see that around here, but I'm not sure about that business model for every place in America.

The only thing I ever eat there is the occasional Egg McMuffin, if it's morning and my choices are limited.

7. in NYC 1010 wins certainly didn't spin it in a positive way
they interviewed bunches of people that said they had no interest in a job that had no real upward mobility and weren't interested being stuck flipping burgers... One of the interviewees said that she knew no one that moved into a management position and that they only hire managers with experience so there was no where to go with that company in contrast to their claims of advancement opportunities.

that anyone really works their way up in McDonalds. They probably worked at McDonalds in college, left for a better job, and then got hired for a management position after getting experience elsewhere. The news interviews just leave out the middle part...they just say "first job was flipping burger and now he/she is a manager."

13. I don't like McDonald's food but the free P.R. they are ....
..... getting from their "national hiring day" might very well boost their
business of selling food which in turn might let them hire more people
to make and serve that food. Businesses need to make money in order
to hire people.

19. McDonald's hires around 1 million workers in the US every year
This estimate from Fast Food Nation assumes a 700,000 domestic workforce with 150% turnover rate. 50,000 new hires is about the normal replacement rate, but it is a good pr stunt.

20. About six or seven years ago, during
one of those summers where summer jobs for young people were hard to come by, I sent my son out every single day to apply for work. Now, this son is very awkward socially, and although he's smart and willing to work hard, his people skills are not his strongest point. But every day I specified three or four places to apply to, and on about the third day, when the first place on the list was the Mickey D's about a half mile from home, he came home a couple of hours later with a look of bewildered amazement on his face and said, "They hired me."

I likewise am not all that fond of McDonald's food, and in fact I haven't been to one in about four years now. But a job was a job. The manager at that location was also a very good manager, and a couple of years later, when the son tracked down the manager to use as a reference, the manager said he'd really like it if the son would be willing to come back to work for him.

It was a very positive experience all around.

22. I feel the same, a job is a job
especially when it comes to teenagers. The best thing about working for McDonald's is that she can get more hours with her school schedule than if she were working at Publix or Walgreens (our 17 yr. old son works at Publix).

25. I will say that I would not have been inclined
to send him to WalMart for a job, at least not until exhausting every other legal possibility. But I have often told my sons that it's better to work than not work. That same son recently completed a CAD (computer aided drafting) degree at his local junior college, and because of the economy can't find a full time CAD job. So I suggested he apply at the CAD lab at his school, and they just about hired him on the spot. It's only thirty hours a week, but he does get benefits, and again, it's better than not working.

32. Yes, it's a good start.
Our oldest son has been bagging groceries since he was 14 and is in training at the deli now (he'll get a decent raise and far more hours). We also found out that they will also reimburse him for certain college classes and books as long as he has good grades, so that will be a help!

30. Are they trying to send a message to current and future employees? Letting us know how expendable
we really are now? I'm just speculating, but with the current economic slavery push by the corps...

The situation is truly getting dire when McD's is the best prospect most have for any employment at all at this time. Isn't it considered a manufacturing position now, after Jr.**?

I wish you the best of luck, Twin Vox. Any port in a storm these days. But damn it, the ports should at least support a living wage, not below poverty level.

43. Look
At least SOMEONE is creating jobs in America... Love 'em or Hate 'em McDonald's is trying. I wouldn't be surprised if this was part of a long term strategy - Take a dip in overall profits for a little by hiring some extra help, so when we crawl out from under this mess and people have moved on and found bigger/better jobs - they'll look back and think fondly of McDonald's for helping them when they were down.

To me, this looks like a billion dollar company trying to do the right thing, right now.

Then again maybe my glass is half full.
