3. I'm living off the income from the market but rather than the numbers |
|
at the end of the day that affect my net worth, I'm much more concerned by how corporations are hoarding cash rather than paying the dividends they're supposed to be paying and stiffing their workers in the process.
However, proxy votes have started to get very, very interesting. If anyone else out there is getting them, I suggest you read them and vote FOR anything the BOD suggests you vote against. There's some pretty progressive stuff on there and I surmise the actual meetings have been getting more interesting than the plutocracy would like them to be.

7. I'm in the same boat as you, so I pay attention. But I usually just dump those proxy votes |
|
in the trash. I definitely know that I shouldn't assign my vote back to the company, which they always ask for. And I normally don't like to vote on something when I'm not familiar with the issues. But just voting against the BOD recommends.... I like that idea. I think I'll try it!!! Thanks for the idea!

16. Take a look at them. There's a lot of environmental stuff on them |
|
along with the bare beginnings of trying to rein in executive pay. If you dump them, the BOD just takes it as voting the way they want you to.
Better fish them out of the trash.

Stocks aren't simply the plaything of the fabulously wealthy. Many Americans own stocks obtained through ESPPs, ISOs, RSUs, etc.

what conditions are like "on Main Street," instead of treated as what it really is: a short-term thermometer reading that some use do decide whether to make short-term investment decisions.

The DJIA is only 30 stocks. There are thousands and thousands of publicly traded companies in the U.S., and many, many more worldwide.

28. Right, the "DJIA" is a promotional tool so the news has something to report. |
|
I work constantly with some other casual stock pickers and never have I ever once heard any of them refer to the Dow or the DJIA in our discussions.
We're interested in individual stocks or ETF's but the DJIA ETF's aren't the best performing ones out there, so that doesn't even give us cause to mention it. I've had plenty of days where the Dow is down 2% and I'll be up 5% or vice versa. To us traders it really isn't indicative of anything, just a bunch of stocks we don't own.

All that return on investment and cushy retirement accounts come at the expense of the poor and working poor. Lousy fucking jobs with low pay and no benefits so the investor class can see adequate returns in order to maintain a comfortable or more lifestyle until death.
No universal health care because wall street would shit a brick and lose billions. War after war because wall street sees endless $$$ signs. Privatize the crap out of everything so investors can get a guaranteed return on the pillage and plunder of the public commons.
Can't go after criminal banksters who stole us blind because what wall street do??? OMG, they might lose money.
It's rotten to the core.

15. Well, I do not care any longer. |
|
When my company laid me off, I pulled my 401K and IRA and moved them into my savings, which I am glad I did because the stock market was tanking. When I was laid off, I was past retirement age anyway, but wanted to work a bit longer to get more money into my 401K. But now at least I am not losing money. Even though the savings is not building up too much interest, I have enough money there to not have to eat cat food for a few years.

My Wife & I went On Strike in 2006. We cashed out what little we had on Wall Street, and used it to buy Bubble Proof land in the Rural South. We live there now and produce a good percentage of our own food.

31. All that funny money the Fed is cooking up is going RIGHT INTO the stock market |
|
Edited on Thu Apr-21-11 02:48 PM by kenny blankenship
It doesn't pass "Go" but flies straight into the paper asset markets without first washing through the real economy. (Maybe someday a crumb will trickle down)
So if Mr. Market don't go up, then Ben is printing away like mad for no result at all. His scheme to refloat the busted banks will be a catastrophic failure in that case, sooner rather than later. So you bet I hope the stock market goes up. You bet I do. I wish there were responsible people in DC and NY to reform our system and put our economy on a sound footing again. But since there ISN'T ANY SUCH PERSON, I hope the criminal machinations of the Treasury and the Fed don't result in an immediate implosion. I am thus forced to hope they "get away with it". See, I have to live here for the foreseeable, and if I can't have a non-criminal government, I'd AT LEAST prefer to continue with something like my former standard of living for as long as possible, rather than have to fight you all for caches of canned beans and freeze-dried salisbury steaks.

I could hardly rail against the abuses of corporations if I'm supporting them with my investments. I don't make much money being out of my works 401k program and I miss the match but I can at least sleep at night knowing I'm not helping the MIC or making a few cents whenever someone is denied health care. If your not part of the solution, you might be part of the problem.

After having lost a significant sum of money in the crash, it has rebounded nicely. I would be happier if it had just added to what I had in there before but apparently one can not have everything. I would like to get it all out of there to invest on my own but the penalties for doing so are ridiculous.

Obviously maximizing the value of the S&P 500 shouldn't be the central goal of economic policy, but one has to recognize that pretty much every retirement savings plan whether it's a defined-benefit pension or a 401(k) is tied to the fortunes of the stock market.
