Poll question: Do you take public transportation for your commute?
I have some ideas about how to get messages out and some organization going. I am gathering info, so please let me know what you do, and keep this kicked.

I hope to follow up with a few other questions.

1. I walk to the basement. Mr. Brickbat, however, is a single driver to work.

3. SUBWAY
I'm a proud New Yorker, I take the subway. We complain, because they just upped the fares to $104 a month. And that's basically my only transportation costs.

Thank you public transportation.

I also run a blog about the subway--feel free to share your funniest, wildest, and most memorable public transportation moments with me at

5. When I lived in New York, late night rides on the bus were always more eventful than the subway....

..... including the guy who tried to board a bus in lower Manhattan with a rat....on a leash.

24. I love New York's public transportation --especially the ubiquitous subway system
seamless, fast, efficient.

i loved taking the subway, even the ugly stepchild "C" line which was the only line that stopped near my Central Park West hotel.

....... and LOVING the peace of mind that comes with not dealing with the rush hour silliness on I-75 in the Detroit metropolitan area.

41. How's the drive time?
The times I took a bus, my normal 25 minute commute took over an hour and a half. I do that when the car's in the shop, but not usually.

8. I've always been willing to take a bus/subway
But in Memphis we just really don't have it. Our city is set up strangely where most of the jobs besides lawyers and hospitals are in the suburbs. Weeks can go by without me seeing one single bus, the bus stops are empty of people almost all the time. I would happily car pool if I knew of anyone near me who worked near me, but that has not been the case.

We now have a boss who is excellent about us working from home, which is a Godsend with the price of gas right now!

9. When I had a job, yes.
MUCH MUCH cheaper to buy a $45.00 Monthly bus pass (unlimited rides for 2 cities) than gas for my gas-guzzling but dearly loved) F-150.

15. I really, really, REALLY wish
that I could telecommute my job. It's a cube-farm job, (drafting) and really does not require working in an office building 7.4 miles from home. We print everything out, but even that isn't necessary by me. Let me just PDF it, the checker can then markup the PDF as Acrobat allows for that kind of thing within the file and someone in the office can then print it out for their filing cabinets. Why do I need to be at this office at all?

18. Bicycle 12½ miles each way
Portland has pretty good public transit, but it doesn't run around the clock (5 a.m. to midnight, roughly). There are any number of folks who wish it did. But good public transit and bikable roads don't just happen. Left to their own devices, city leaders are quite content to make everything automobile-centric. It takes an organized, consistent effort on the part of the public to get things moving in a direction where the car isn't king. There isn't any pay to speak of, the hours are long, and the rewards iffy at best. But sooner or later, after a long enough, sustained enough effort, the culture changes (if only a little bit) to where developers and renovators begin taking public transit, walking and biking into account, or are pressured to do so by the civic leadership. Projects that encourage transportation besides cars are encouraged, and the area takes on a new flavor and appearance.

That's all the bad news. The good news is that many things have been done before, and have left very good examples of what to do (as well as a few examples of what not to do). Good luck!

12 miles away. No busses run at that time. My daughter drives nearly as far to community college. She could take a bus but then she wouldn't have enough time get to and from her jobs.

No trains around here, zero.

HOWEVER: Before I married, I walked to my (same) job. I took the bus to Graduate School classes.

And whenever I visit NYC, I take the bus.

31. Walk 1 block to the bus, ride it to the train, 10 minutes from there to downtown
The whole thing takes about 30-45 minutes depending on how lucky I get. I love it. Don't have a car, don't need one, don't want one.

But I'm lucky enough to live somewhere with pretty decent mass transit (Chicago). I know that not everyone has that option, and people in some areas never will. I wish more people had it.

34. Just moved to a place very close to the commuter train
I drive probably two miles to the train station, and it's counter-traffic, so hardly any waiting for traffic in each direction. I was driving about 16 miles each way every day, in heavy traffic, generally frustrated, and usually taking about an hour. I love taking the train that whisks me home in about 17 minutes at the end of a long day. No more traffic. No more driving in a blinding rainstorm (that always seems to hit right at rush hour). Just a very short bus ride (less than five minutes usually) from a stop right across the street from my office down to Riverfront Station, and then ZOOM! Off to Hermitage, home in no time.

The only downside: the train ride is so short that I don't really have any time to enjoy my book. I get maybe 2-3 pages read and then it's time to get off.

39. I carry a bus pass...
...and on occasion I take the train.

While riding the bus on the morning commute on a very gridlocked street, I used to check the cars passing. Nearly every one contained a lone motorist -- no kids, no co-workers. That's just a casual observation, but apparently it's true in general that most people drive to work in their own car and those of us who carpool or take public transport are in a minority.

I live out in the country, far from any public transportation.

Instead I either ride in my truck, or ride my scooter.
