all these amazing outbreaks that were supposed to end mankind as we know it. We had some really intense arguments on the DU over these.

Hype or hammer time?

3. My youngest got West Nile. 105 degree temps for a few days.
She survived. West Nile is alive and well throughout the country. Most who are infected get no symptoms at all, a significant fraction get some minor symptoms, and an unlucky few get what my child did. As with all diseases, a few die.

Americans are big on hysteria.

and the crimes of the Bush administration.

8. I keep my luggage in hotel bathrooms, I've given up beef, and I get flu shots.
Ignorance is not bliss.

MRSA and Super-bugs are still around, too.

9. It is still around. It is just not advantageous for us to be
concerned about it right now, so the media doesn't report on it. I think they are letting us digest the horrible status of unemployment and the economy. We shouldn't worry our pretty little heads about the other stuff right now.

14. Knowledge is good
Knowledge can change behaviors. Being aware can help stop the spread of many illnesses.

I had a friend die of swine flu a year ago October in Germany. She was middle aged and healthy. I'm certainly glad the number of deaths did not grow to large numbers. I miss her dearly.

I think it does become fodder for the media and they add to the drama, but if the alternative is to not talk about these things, I would prefer the drama.

15. no quilts for vets - BEDBUGS
http://www.accessrx.com/blog/current-health-news/quilters-bed-bugs-l0421

-snip-

Their needles are always moving. The Quilters of Valor churned out more than 1,000 blankets for wounded soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan, but now their production has been halted.

The Minneapolis Department of Veterans Affairs has asked the women to cool their quilting jets. The VA says they will no longer accept any handmade goodies because of bed bugs. The quilters were told it is part of a nationwide directive to stop the critters from spreading through Veteran’s facilities.

The quilters have told a local newspaper that they are little offended by the order, since they use new fabric and typically work on quilts at local stores that offer an open space for the women to work. But it seems bed bugs are a growing concern every where.

-snip-

this is a blog clip. I saw a story in the Mpls. StarTribune.

19. There was a horrific pandemic of avian flu, leaving few survivors.

I was one of the few and DU exists only in my head.

When I'm off DU, it doesn't exist.
