OK Kids, You Are Grossly Obese, But At Least You Are Safe.
This past Monday the NYC Parks Dept. demolished the only Skate and BMX Park on Staten Island. Staten Island has around 400,000 people. So they are destroying, then rebuilding (maybe, hopefully) a 6 year old park instead of repairing the minor damage and rebuilding what really needed it? Someone is making some money on that one.

What is really driving me nuts now is that we have a manic focus on children’s health with regards to obesity and exercise. But in the name of children’s “safety” we are removing equipment from playgrounds and outlawing activities that actually make it fun to get exercise. We’ve outlawed swings, jungle gyms, see-saws, those spinning carousel thingies, obstacle course style climbing ropes, home made bike/skateboard/rollerblade ramps and in Maryland the INSANE basketball hoop seizure http://tinyurl.com/3tuo668

Dodge-ball is being outlawed along with tag, hide and seek and many kid managed & create games. We are headed toward adult supervision for all sports with 5 coaches, referees and expensive mandatory equipment that tries to make all activities 100% safe and very profitable for sports equipment makers.

I tell my kids, if you play sports you will get injured. It is 100% inevitable at some point that you’ll get hurt. They understand that and they all play sports anyway (I’m a bad Dad). I believe kids will get hurt on playgrounds as well, everyday of the year for as long as there are playgrounds.

So kids, get lots of exercise, but make sure you are in your 100% totally safe, sterilized, padded, double lined, UV protected, oxygenated bubble when ever you go outside.

PS, don’t let anyone sweat on you, all kids who are not you have extremely toxic germs.

EOR.

1. Remember those insane metal merry-go-rounds?
that wobbled and would throw you off at top speed if you did not hold on tight?

4. Yeah!!!! I LOVED THOSE!!!
Does anyone remember 'pump bar swings'? I loved them too, but they had been removed due to safety concerns before I was out of high school. They were a real upper body workout.

2. Delaware ripped down the basketball nets, not Maryland.
I raised 2 free range boys. I never regret letting them play outside without constant adult supervision.

7. FSogol you are correct. My bad.
I should never lay incorrect blame on those who did not commit such a heinous act.
