High card draw settles tied election

By Cy Ryan
Monday, Dec. 20, 2010 | 5:15 p.m.

CARSON CITY (Nevada) – An eight of hearts in a card draw has given Eureka County Clerk-Treasurer Jackie Berg another four years in office.

Berg, a member of the Independent American Party, and Carrie Wright, who formerly worked in the clerk-treasurer’s office, both polled 373 votes in the November election.

<snip>

This is the third card draw due to a tie election in November. The others were in a Kingsbury Grade General Improvement District in Douglas County and in a Nye County GOP primary race for county commissioner. (emphasis added)

How do you settle election ties in your state?

1. That's how they roll, er, draw
Yep, I remember thinking similar thoughts when I first heard of it. IIRC some in Texas have used a coin toss.

I would have to look up Md.

3. It just struck my funny bone, er, funny.
:D

Leaving democracy up to chance seems...medieval some how.

8. Now 6 shooters at ten paces would be medieval
A game of chance is quite civilized.

It is fun though.

11. I had that thought as well after reading of the high card draw.
You wanna play politics, you better be the fastest draw in the west, podner.

2. That's soooo appropriate! I love it!
I have no idea how they do it in other states, even the ones I've lived in.

4. In Oregon, we do the "head stash rumble". Each of the politicians involved...
...whips out their "head stash" (their highest quality marijuana, usually reserved for smoking only on special occasions) and twenty randomly chosen voters are asked to attend. The stashes are secretly labelled, and 10 nugs are culled from each. The voters are given either buds from candidate A or candidate B (they don't know which), and then allowed to take one big puff.

At the end of an hour, whoever has the least number of their secretly-picked 10 voters standing is announced the winner.

We used to do Trial by Beavers but on a few occasions neither politician survived the Battle Royale cage match and we had to put whatever looked like the meanest beaver in office.

10. It seems to be a trend.
It's not something I'd ever thought of.

I guess a card draw is no more weird than a coin toss.

9. That is an Abysmally Low Turnout
Per Wikipedia:

As of the 2000 census there are 52,457 people, 20,171 households

and only 746 voted in that race?

12. This is for Eureka County - pop from 2K Census: 1,651.
My guess is you looked up Carson City as that was the dateline of the story.

I'm not sure about the other 2 election areas.

13. Section 15651 of the California Elections Code says ties are settled by lot
Coin flip, straws, dice, or playing cards would all be lawful methods.

I suppose they could even play rock-paper-scissors.
