1. I'll admit it... I'm a fan of the Queen
Especially since she was no fan of Margaret Thatcher. :)

As an American I don't think it's any of my business whether Britain has a monarchy, but I do think that if they're going to have one, she's awesome.

I think she was still just a princess when she met Truman, though.

3. She became Queen 6th February 1952
Does that put it in perspective with regard to Truman ?

The King died unexpectedly that day and she was given the news having just arrived in Kenya on a State visit. She was crowned 2nd June 1953 and to celebrate/coincide sugar was finally taken off rationing.

5. Her coronation was the 1st thing I ever saw on TV.
We were all at a neighbor's house because they were the only one with a set!

Didn't know that about sugar...

:)

7. Same here
We lived at my Grandmother's then and she got a TV for the occasion.

The day the King died I was playing with friends up the road. The mother of one them called him in and sent me home having said the King had died. I strolled into my Grandmother's and said "The King's dead" and she freaked. Aside from announcements BBC Radio was taken off the air for the rest of that day.

FDR was the first president she met. He stayed at Windsor Castle in 1942.

2. She's a sweety.
Only ever seen her once. That was when she passed by in the Rolls, waving and smiling , to open a hospital up the road apiece to me. She's quite tiny as was her Mother.

Impressive group of pics which compliment your Presidents too - thanks for posting.

12. Are you going to watch the royal wedding?
Edited on Fri Apr-22-11 04:32 AM by Violet_Crumble
Don't know if you've heard of The Chaser, but they're really funny and they're going to be doing a wedding special next Friday, so if you can somehow get access to ABC2 on the internet, it'd be worth watching. I wouldn't bother watching the wedding if it only had boring and dry commentary...

27. Sounds like my great-grandmother...
may she rest in peace. That woman drank Dewars like it was going out of style. My dad could never figure out how she got the Dewars by the case, as she lived with her sister, who was equally old. When great-grandma died, we found out that my uncle was bringing her the scotch.

22. I remember reading somewhere, I don't remember just where,
but I believe the purse is mainly used as a signaling device for the staff. For example, if she shifts it to a certain arm she is ready to end a particular conversation and move on, etc. I would provide a link to the article, but unfortunately I can't remember where I read it. FWIW, she kind of reminds me of Sophia from the Golden Girls when I see her with her purse. Cute as can be!

28. Yes - a signaling device
Enquiring minds want to know: just what does Queen Elizabeth carry in that purse? As it turns out, there is more to the royal purse than its meager contents. It doubles as a signal device. When the Queen is carrying out her royal duties at some function, she uses her purse to communicate with her servants. When she shifts the bag from one arm to another, for instance, it means she’s ready to leave. When at a banquet, if the Queen sets her purse on the floor, it’s another bad sign. She finds the conversation boring and wants to escape. However, if the royal bag dangles happily from the crook of her left arm, she is happy and relaxed. (2)

14. while we don't have a monarchy
Queen Elizabeth is quite the lady and her presence (and stability) across 60 years of her reign is quite something.

Say what you like about the institution, it offers the appearance of stability that has a certain amount of appeal.

31. LBJ is the only Pres. she never met during her reign ...
She probably would have met him at Kennedy's funeral, but she was pregnant with Edward at the time and so didn't travel. She never received - nor did she ever extend - an invitation to LBJ during the rest of his presidency.

I loved seeing the pictures of her through the years. What a lovely lady she is and what a life she has lived. Good health and long life to her. Thanks for this thread.

37. I love the progression of how much more casual she becomes over the years
In the initial photos at the beginning of her reign she's done up completely, heavy with jewelry and long gowns. By the end with Barack Obama, she looks just like my Nana!
