TN Senate OKs Bill That Would Make it Illegal to Mention the Existence of Gay People to Students
from AlterNet:

TN Senate OKs Bill That Would Make it Illegal to Mention the Existence of Gay People to Students

The Tennessee Senate Judiciary Committee has approved one lawmaker's revolutionary plan to fight the "homosexual agenda": don't tell students gay people exist until they get to high school. (!!!)

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports:

The measure (SB49) is sponsored by Sen. Stacey Campfield, R-Knoxville, who unsuccessfully pushed the same idea - nicknamed the "don't say gay" bill - for six years as a member of the state House before he was elected to the Senate.

As introduced, the bill would have put into law a declaration that it is illegal to discuss any sexual behavior other than heterosexuality prior to the ninth grade.

Absurd? Of course. The logic appears to be: if young students aren't allowed to hear about homosexuality in school, then they won't hear about it anywhere, and then there will be no more gay people. And that's... a good thing. Apparently.

But the bill is actually worse than absurd -- it's potentially very dangerous, as it would hamper efforts to prevent anti-gay bullying among students. (If you can't say the world "gay," how can you teach young people that bullying gay classmates is wrong? And how can you offer a lifeline to students who may be suffering at the hands of such bullying?) ...........(more)

4. "Pay no attention to that fag behind the curtain!"
Note: only used the word "fag" for emphasis, not as a slur.

So what's next? Make it illegal to mention Hispanics? Make it illegal to mention Blacks? I'm sure they won't make it illegal to mention Muslims because they are *OBVIOUSLY* all terrorists. What the HELL is wrong with these people? The only "homosexual agenda" is "LEAVE US THE FUCK ALONE", and I support them on that. Face it, people, about ten percent of the population is gay. Get OVER it.

8. The list of people for them to like gets shorter each day. They still live in
the dark ages and want to keep it that way. What a ridiculous place. An anchor in backward.

10. Yeah, and the "original Americans" were white Christians.

My small traces of Native American blood (two known ancestors, 17th and 18th century) boils when I hear some obvious recent transplant bark about "illegal aliens". FUCK OFF! My homestead on my mother's side dates back to the 17th century and was about 12 miles from where I live now. The most recent immigrant ancestor I have is my paternal grandmother who almost tried to come over on the Titanic with her father. That trip was, fortunately, delayed.

So for all of you "birther" assholes - FUCK YOU!

6. Sounds even worse than Thatcher's infamous 'Section 28'
Section 28 of the Local Government Act 1988 was a controversial amendment to the United Kingdom's Local Government Act 1986, enacted on 24 May 1988 and repealed on 21 June 2000 in Scotland, and on 18 November 2003 in the rest of the UK by section 122 of the Local Government Act 2003.<1> The amendment stated that a local authority "shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality" or "promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship".<2>

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Section_28

Since no-one was quite sure what 'promoting' meant, in practice this discouraged some discussion of homosexuality in schools, but it did continue in some forms. But the TN bill would stop any sort of discussion whatsoever.

7. One small nit-pick...
When it comes to bullying it should not be done PERIOD. Doesn't matter the kids sexual preference. I was bullyed in elementary school and I am straight.

9. These people have no right to govern
They are not sane. They are not human. Like Gaddafi, like Mubarak, like Ben Ali, like Saleh, like Assad - they need to go.

11. But yet the people vote them in. I am more scared of people that vote these
fools in than the politicians. We see examples all over the US of people voted in that have no right to govern.

Exactly as you said, "they are not sane." We have a number of politicians in office with serious character flaws. Their intentions have little to do with the betterment of the country and our future.

12. Why be Shocked
This is the state that brought you the Scopes Monkey Trial. They have also been trying to stop the Theory of evolution from being taught. Also you only have to get your car inspected once and that is when you buy it. Who knows how many dangerous cars are on the road in that state. Tennessee and South Carolina should just merge.

13. There are gay people that don't even HAVE sex.
"Gay" could just be about someone having love feelings for someone of the same sex. That's not sexual behavior by any means.
