NASHVILLE, Tenn. - State lawmakers are sending strong signals that collective bargaining rights may be over for Tennessee teachers.
It appears legislators are in the process of working out their differences about the controversial issue and may come to an agreement soon.
At first there were signs of hope when lawmakers in the House came up with their version of the collective bargaining bill. In that version, the union would still be able to negotiate in certain areas like pay and teacher evaluation standards.
But the Senate version does away with collective bargaining all together. On Thursday, it looked like the House is ready to follow the Senate's lead.
"So we are looking at ways to take the Senate amendment, which is a good first step, and add a little of our own thoughts to it," said House Speaker Beth Harwell.
