Poll question: Do we need a Civil War Forum?
With the advent of the sesquicentennial anniversary of the Civil War we have seen quite a number of threads devoted to events of the era. I can only see more of this in the future as anniversaries of major events occur. The threads have been quite stimulating and lively in my opinion and I wonder if they are distracting to the other denizens of GD.

The thing I have found most interesting is after 150 years, this is still being debated. The number of phrases that are spin in the vocabulary and the notions that are being defended testify to the amount of pain the notion of human chattel inflicted on this nation, and how much of it remains.

I also wonder what the effects of exploring a time when republicans were the progressives of the day would be on DU. I think it would be worthwhile to look at the politics of the antebellum that led to the rise of the republican party. There may be parallels to the present.

2. I say yes, as I would also like suggestions on books, visits, etc.
Big student of the Civil War here (Bulletin: It was about slavery.) Might be entertaining, and certainly more educated than the FReeper threads on the same topic.

the logical place, imo.

5. Really, distraction by thread titles on a forum is a self-inflicted problem
I never got how there's always people complaining about the topic of the week/month/etc being the topic of the week/month/etc; at least in my case it hasn't interfered with my ability to follow threads I'm interested in. I don't see why that topic would need to be sequestered elsewhere any more than most fairly specific ones.

6. I recommended your post, but I didn't vote in the poll. I think that there should have been an
additional option to vote for, and neither of the two choices described my sentiments.

I think it would be a great idea to have a Civil War forum. But I don't find it distracting to have the threads in General Discussion. I just think we should dedicate a whole section, with easy-to-find posts, whose sole purpose is to debunk the myth that the Civil War was not about slavery. And to point out how lucky it was for the whole world that the Confederacy did not triumph.

7. Yes, We Need Such A Forum.

Get the "It Wasn't About Slavery" Confederate apologists into their own little area and let them stew in their fetid juices. We've done that with our Gun Enthusiasts, and the Neo-Confederates are just as big an embarrassment on a Democratic site. Give them a little taste of segregation and see how they like it......

12. Couldn't we just ban neo-confederates?

It's not like they don't already have another party out there that caters to them.

8. We survived without a Terri Schiavo forum, we can survive without a Civil War forum
Besides we'd need one for first civil war and one for the pending civil war. ;-)

9. DU's weird obsession with the
civil war kinda freaks me out. I am a native Texan and in all my life the civil war was never discussed except in school.

I find it all very strange...especially when so many posters harp on the south never getting "over it"..

10. That's what makes GD interesting.
The Confederate apologist thread co-exists next to the pro-Marxist thread. I don't think civil war threads will ever take up as much space as the Gungeon and I/P threads.

11. I think the problem has been an egregiously bad disruptor over the last few days.
But the mods solved that.

13. GD will work.
You send it to it's own forum or the history forum and it's out of sight, out of mind. From the responses and views, the War is a hot topic.
Keep it just where it is.
