Collins is first GOP senator to oppose Ryan budget proposal
By Josiah Ryan - 04/22/11 03:21 PM ET

Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine.) said Friday that she will not support the 2012 budget passed by the House last week.

"I don't happen to support Congressman Ryan's plan but at least he had the courage to put forth a plan to significantly reduce the debt," Collins said on "In the Arena" a program on WCSH 6, a local NBC affiliate in Portland, Maine.

Collins is the first Republican senator to state publicly that she will not support the Ryan budget.

The plan, crafted by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), would cut $5.8 trillion in spending over 10 years and transform Medicare into a sort of voucher system, among other measures, to balance the budget by 2040 without raising taxes.

1. sorry but anyone who is 'serious' about reducing debt must look at cutting
defense. bringing troops home from all those places we never left. one could argue that single payer healthcare would reduce the deficit as well. but these people aren't truly interested in bringing down the debt. they are only interested in reducing the amount any rich person has to pay towards it. and when they bankrupt this country and have gotten all they can from it, they will go off in their private planes and move elsewhere to be parasites there leaving the rest of us to sacrifice all on our own.

2. Well, that is half of the moderate Republicans in the Senate. Can we get Snowe too?
For a clean sweep.
