It further exacerbates a corrosive culture on the right that now celebrates the Cult of Idiocy — from Glenn Beck to Michele Bachmann — where riling liberals is more valuable than reason and logic, and where intellectualism and even basic learnedness are viewed with suspicion and contempt.

It further advances the campaign of the rich and powerful in America to exploit the fears of those who feel most fragile in an effort to increase or insulate their fortunes.

Sorry, but I lay blame for this on the media. It is the media that "celebrates the Cult of Idiocy" from the RW hate industry on talk radio & Fox to the very pages of the NYT which prominently feature crackpot preachers, "birthers" and a steady flow of "infotainment." Looking for something serious to think about? Forget TV as it is awash in look-alike situation comedies (cheap to produce) and "shaky-cam" scary fear-inducing "crime" fantasies like CSI whatever. Judging by their quality, I suspect the "writers" get paid $5 a script.

The lead story on both AP and CBS radio news yesterday was Lindsey Lohan.

What a farce.
