"Now Know Ye..." - Queen consents to royal wedding

(Reuters) - The Queen has given her formal consent to the marriage of grandson Prince William and Kate Middleton in the form of a historic hand written legal document made of vellum and elaborately illuminated.

Under the terms of the Royal Marriages Act of 1772, the monarch must formally approve the marriage of her children and of most direct descendants of King George II, who reigned in the 18th century, before their wedding. The Instrument of Consent, images of which were made available by William's office on Thursday, bears the queen's signature "Elizabeth R" and is sealed with the Great Seal of the Realm.

It reads: "NOW KNOW YE that We have consented and do by these Presents signify Our Consent to the contracting of Matrimony between Our Most Dearly Beloved Grandson Prince William Arthur Philip Louis of Wales, K.G., and Our Trusty and Well-beloved Catherine Elizabeth Middleton."

The Instrument of Consent is one of a very few instruments that pass under the Great Seal which bear the monarch's signature. It will be given to William and Middleton after their wedding on April 29. The document was illuminated by one of a panel of scrivener/artists retained by the Crown Office...

19. Smoked salmon on toast -
Sausage rolls, mini Cornish pasties and a couple of others.

Sounds like Liz popped into Tescos and got the bargain canapes.

38. Yeah - it's the British equivalent of "under God" or "In God We Trust"
It's on British coins as "D.G." - Dei Gratia, 'by the grace of god' in Latin.

37. Really?
Is that what that means? It sort of looked like an insult or something. Cars are trusty - bikes are trusty, but a woman??

42. I was joking about Kate having to sign a pre-nup, but considering the vast amount...
of wealth controlled by the family, and Diana's 26 million dollar divorce settlement, I wouldn't be surprised if she was asked to sign one.

Yeah, "trusty" isn't the most complimentary descriptor, especially considering the Cambridge Dictionary's definition.

"Trusty - able to be trusted, especially because of having been owned and used for a long time"

15. Thank goodness she gave her consent!
:eyes:

With the progress that has been made, some people still need the consent of others to chose who they wish to be with.
Such an archaic practice.

16. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses
not from some farcical aquatic ceremony

.....you can't expect to wield supreme executive power just because some watery tart threw a sword at you!

.....if I went 'round sayin' I was Emperor, just because some moistened bink lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!

Hardly anyone these days takes the time to hire a calligrapher and consult the protocol volumes necessary to make a proper note.

And good vellum costs a fortune these days.

44. Considering how easily the "Unitary Executive" model that Bush and Cheney were pushing,...
(and Obama had done little to distance from) has been accepted by Congress, the Supreme Court, and most people, it seems this country longs for a King of its very own.
