Level of Radioactivity in Seawater near Fukushima Plant Near Hitting Record

The amount of radioactivity in seawater near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is about to hit the highest-ever level recorded in history.

According to the Asahi Shimhun on Sunday, officials measured 1-hundred-86 becquerels per liter of radioactive substances in the sea just 34 kilometers from the crippled power plant on April 15t.

This level is about 20-thousand times higher ...

1. "just 34 kilometers"?
I was expecting to read that those measurements were taken several hundred yards offshore. TThis is terrible. Without doing a conversion, that's something like 20 miles away. That is a lot of room for some dilution to take place. You have to wonder how bad it is 100 kms offshore, or further...

2. The all-time high of 200 becquerels per liter was a result of the accident at Windscale in the UK
Edited on Mon Apr-25-11 09:25 AM by Poll_Blind
Later named Sellafield, the Windscale nuclear disaster in the UK remained a secret for quite a long time. You can watch a fascinating documentary about it here on YouTube. That's part 1, it's easy to find the other parts. I think there's 5 or so in total.

It is a little slow-moving at first but terribly interesting and very germane to the discussions we're having right now about Fukushima.

It is worth noting that while the becquerels per liter may be lower than Windscale, the Fukushima radioactive poisoning covers a much, much larger area. The reading itself merely indicates how intensely-poisoned a bit of radioactive water is, not how many other billion or ten billion liters of water are poisoned as much or more.

3. Move along now. 20,000 X nothing to worry about is still nothing to worry about.
Or so the nuke lovers would have us believe.

It's no different from flying from LA to NYC, silly.
