Congressional Black Caucus Overwhelmingly Supports the “People’s Budget”

Black Caucus Overwhelmingly Supports “People’s Budget”
Black Agenda Radio commentary by Glen Ford
April 19, 2011

When the enemy convinces us that his victory is inevitable, then he has already won the psychological war. Wall Street, which owns the White House, most of both Houses of Congress and, quite literally, the corporate media, is in a mad rush to save itself from its own contradictions by dismantling or privatizing much of the government, while cutting taxes for its own class to the bone. At the same time, under the canard of national defense, the U.S. military spends as much as the rest of the world combined to bring the entire planet under the Pentagon’s full spectrum dominance. The ever-expanding war budget is justified on national security grounds, while the destruction of the domestic social safety net is supposedly unavoidable because…well, because the government is broke.

Of course, banks and other corporations are not broke; they’re doing better than ever. And the rich are richer than at any time in history. They are the ones demanding austerity, and expect their demands are to be treated as law, like stone tablets delivered by Moses from the hands of God.

Obama and the Republicans sing variations on the same song: Surrender to the Inevitable. For Black America, which is being pushed back to pre-civil rights era levels of income and wealth disparity, surrender is no option. Thus, it was encouraging that overwhelming numbers of the Congressional Black Caucus voted in favor of a so-called “People’s Budget” that shows, in dollars and cents, that the Republican and Obama agenda is not inevitable, that the budget deficits can become surpluses by the year 2021 while saving social programs.

The 77 supporters of the People’s Budget were outnumbered by the 108 Democrats that voted with the GOP and Obama’s side of the party. But they did show that not everyone believes that resistance is futile, even if a Black president tells them so. For Black Agenda Radio, I’m Glen Ford. On the web, go to www.BlackAgendaReport.com.

-------------------------------------------

The CPC proposal:

• Eliminates the deficits and creates a surplus by 2021
• Puts America back to work with a “Make it in America” jobs program
• Protects the social safety net
• Ends the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq
• Is FAIR (Fixing America’s Inequality Responsibly)

What the proposal accomplishes:

• Primary budget balance by 2014.
• Budget surplus by 2021.
• Reduces public debt as a share of GDP to 64.1% by 2021, down 16.5 percentage points from
a baseline fully adjusted for both the doc fix and the AMT patch.
• Reduces deficits by $5.6 trillion over 2012-21, relative to this adjusted baseline.
• Outlays equal to 22.2% of GDP and revenue equal 22.3% of GDP by 2021.

20. I don't support it at all. It raises taxes on the middle class,
will increase gas and food prices, and absolutely guts the military. It is dead on arrival at Congress, and to be quite frank - a waste of paper. Feel free to Rec it all you want, but I won't.

23. I read that it will raise taxes on the rich not the middle class..
"It's a great proposal, as it produces a federal surplus by 2021 without cutting services for the poor, the elderly and the middle-class. Instead, it basically just ends the wars, ends the Bush tax cuts, and reduces unemployment. Which, as we saw in the 1990's, is actually about all you need to do to balance the federal budget."http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/04/22/969354/-Serious-media-starting-to-warm-to-The-Peoples-Budget

Now this sounds good to me. K&R For not cutting services for the poor.....

6. Based on the date the People's Budget seems much more pragmatic and sensible than Ryan's or Obama's
So why aren't all the "pragmatists" supporting this budget?

9. It has the additional advantage of being reality-based and fiscally responsible
So it must be ignored at all costs. Anyone who brings it up will be dismissed as Not Serious about the deficit (which is now The Most Important Issue in America, far ahead of jobs or any other niggling little preoccupations of you libruls like the ongoing costs of wars and occupations, crumbling infrastructure, access to health care, and other matters of little concern to the wealthy).

10. The efforts here to divide notwithstanding, there is no "Obama's side of the party."
Organizing the Democratic Party has long since been referred to as herding cats, but that is not the same as was inferred in the OP.

11. There are in fact two major political factions inside the Democratic Party.
Edited on Mon Apr-25-11 02:07 PM by Better Believe It
One is led by the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

Who do you think leads the other one?

This political fact has nothing to do with herding cats, sheep nor any other type of animal.

12. By "factions," I think you mean caucuses that compose the Democratic Party.
Edited on Mon Apr-25-11 04:33 PM by AtomicKitten
They have varying differences of opinion on various issues, but in the end their strength is standing together as ONE PARTY.

The collective goal in the upcoming election?

18. To me, this makes great sense (that is the problem)
and all Americans should support the Peoples Budget.
My problem is that we (progressives and thinking citizens) are allowing ourselves to be labeled (it seems) along racial lines. I wish that instead of (just an example) support being reported by the Black Caucus, it was the American Caucus. Just imo...

19. KICK. The Progressive Caucus must have known going in that this would not
even get close to passing otherwise why would they name it The People's Budget?

Naming ANYTHING The People's something or other in Amerika is like calling it The Child Molester's Budget or the Communist Mass Murderers' Budget.

Don't get me wrong because to me it SHOULD BE The People's Budget, but the reality is Amerikans have been so conditioned to think of anything with "The People's" in it as the same as The People's Republic of China.

Marketing 101 FAIL.

24. People's Party!
I guess you don't like Reich's suggestion of a People's Party, either?

Robert Reich (The Principles of the People's Party)
http://robertreich.org/post/3752615196

I see your point, this country is ridiculously communophobic. I think your point is more relevant to Reich's party idea than this budget, which seems like a people's budget to me, and I think it's time to embrace and advocate for socialist ideas in mainstream American political thought, things are skewed way too far in the interests of capital as it is.
