Florida's Rick Scott most unpopular of all newly elected governors. 30% approval.
Here's goes the media again, beating up on Rick Scott, Florida's new governor....after they spent time before the election saying nothing at all about his background in Medicare Fraud. They said nothing about any weakness he might have. They simply gave him a free ride.

So now they are worried? So are people who voted for him. They are just learning about him now. Lately several people have asked me what I know about him. Turns out they just got caught up in the anti-Alex Sink fervor pushed by the Republicans and teabaggers.

Photo from Rick Scott's campaign website

From the Tampa Bay area CBS affiliate Channel 10 News:

A New poll shows Rick Scott has only a 30 percent favorable rating making him the least popular Governor of those newly elected

Tampa, Florida --Since his election, Rick Scott has been going around the state meeting with legislators and citizens. The Governor Elect is making an impression, a bad one. According to Tom Jensen at Public Policy Polling, Scott has only a 30 percent favorable rating.

Jensen says Scott is pretty unpopular and was unpopular the day he got elected. According to Jensen, the fact that Scott got elected is just a sign of how incredibly anti Democratic Florida voters were this year.

However, the fact that Scott has the least favorable rating of any newly elected governor in the country doesn't surprise political consultant Wayne Garcia. Garcia says Scott is not a likeable guy whether you agree or disagree with his politics or not. According to Garcia, Scott will never been Governor "Warm and Fuzzy."

...Don Preston told us he voted for Scott, but doesn't love him because of his background. However, Preston says he cast his ballot for Scott as a vote against Democrat Alex Sink.

And while Scott hopes to increase his favorable rating by running the state like a business, Garcia says the former CEO is in for a rude awakening.

I can tell you that a lot of people fell for the ugly Anti-Sink ads Scott ran. He gave her a whiny nasal voice, the ads were horrible.

In effect, IMO, he bought the election, paid for it out of his own money.

SO now the media is starting to show concern about him, perhaps regretting their complacency at pointing anything unfavorable about him during his campaign. After all his ads must have given money to their media outlet.

Just a few recent excerpts:

From the St. Pete Times editorial board

Incoming Gov. Rick Scott's disdain for government regulation appears to be absolute — and absolutely irresponsible. "What's the benefit of a regulation, other than delay?" he asks.

From Time Magazine:

Rick Scott: Is Florida Ready For Its "Open For Business" Governor?

.."But if Floridians are hoping Scott's corporate acumen can generate jobs for the 1.1 million of them out of work, they're also wary of his corporate past. Scott, after all, had to resign in disgrace in 1997 as CEO of the Columbia/HCA hospital corporation, the world's biggest private health care facility operator (today called just HCA), after it was slapped with $1.7 billion in federal fines for Medicare fraud, the largest such case in U.S. history. Scott himself was never charged with a crime — but the scandal is a big reason people get a tad nervous now whenever the Governor-elect, who refused to talk with any Florida newspaper editorial board during his campaign, ducks out of sight to huddle with executives.

..."As a result, Scott stands to wield less clout in Tallahassee than the establishment Republicans he belittled during his primary campaign, but who happen to control both Florida's House and Senate. "Scott is one of those people who always thinks he's the smartest one in the room," novelist and Miami Herald columnist Carl Hiaasen wrote recently, "but he will soon be educated otherwise."

And from the Miami Herald:

Advisors to Governor-elect Rick Scott are questioning the need for the state's public hospitals -- a group that includes Jackson Health System and the North and South Broward hospital districts.

In a report dated Saturday, the group chaired by Alan Levine, former head of Broward Health, stated it is ``unclear whether government should be in the business of operating a competitive enterprise using tax dollars as a subsidy without a thorough review of whether this model is the most beneficial and cost-effective way to use the tax revenue.''

Yep, just wait until he wants to start shutting down hospitals. And I have not even mentioned his fondness for education vouchers. He wants the public to pay for students to go to any private school they wish to attend. And he has the legislature backing him.

People simply refused to listen to anything bad about him before the election. Today the lady who was cutting my hair said she thinks he is weird, and what do I know about him. I gave her an earful. She said why didn't I tell her before the election.

I said the media failed her. And all the articles they write now won't matter...cause it is too late.

This is just too serious and dismal a situation. I only hope that Floridians can weather this storm. Given how important the state is for the 2012 election, perhaps Scott's election will backfire on the Republicans.

7. I do. I must have told one hundred people about Scott, HCA and his
new enterprise, Solantic. No one wanted to listen because to the people around here, any Republicon is preferable to a Democrat. Everything in this state will be privatized, fees are going to climb sky high and services will be cut.

Working Floridians will not be able to weather this storm.

But, oh well. I did what I could, banged on doors, passed out flyers, and talked and talked. 70% of this county wanted Rick Scott. They got Rick Scott. They will have to live with it.

But I guarantee that any problems Florida faces will be blamed on the Democrats.

20. You betcha to your last sentence. The jag wagons who voted for
Scott were voting against "liberals and Obama" as I was informed time and time again because the "left" in this country are responsible for all "our" problems.

True to form the few times I saw a Scott bumper sticker it was side by side with an anti-Obama/Fire Pelosi one.

6. If his past is any indication, instead of shutting down public hospitals, he may privatize them.
Sell off each component to whichever private hospital chain is willing to buy it up. Whether these chain operators shut down the hospitals is irrelevant. Rick Scott would simply claimed he shut down no public hospital because it became a private matter after the sale.

And they gave him a free ride because they probably made millions off of his campaign ads. That's why public funding and non-profits need to handle the media during elections, like the League of Women Voters used to do. You know they weren't going to say one bad thing while they were being paid to make him look good. Sad.

Look I work for a local station and when that douchebag wouldn't even take questions from the media, they should have been all over it. Nope. Not my station. Even one of our anchors was on the panel that did the debate at Nova. She came back to say that Rick Scott was evasive in everyone of his answers. Even the pre-interview that she did with him. Not a mention of his evasiveness in the news that night. No but how long did the media harp on Alex Sink and the cell phone?? Ooooooh that was just horrible. That damaged the state. The media did a diservice to the people of Florida. The truth should have been out there from the get-go for this slimeball. So thanks "liberal media". You did a heckuva job

Wal-Mart exec and Indiana prison reformer picked to head Florida corrections, emergency management agencies

TALLAHASSEE — Gov.-elect Rick Scott is bringing in an Indiana prison reformer to overhaul the state's correction system and a Wal-Mart executive to ensure Florida's disaster-readiness.

Scott hired Indiana Corrections Commissioner Edwin G. Buss as secretary of the Department of Corrections and Bryan Koon, director of emergency management at Wal-Mart Stores, to run the state Division of Emergency Management.

.....

There are some grim times ahead for Florida.

Interestingly, according to Public Policy Polling, outgoing Governor Charlie Crist has a 50% approval rating, with 39% disapproval.

These are the best numbers found by this poll for him this year.

Grand jury calls for reform, citing pervasive government corruption
By Janet Zink and Michael C. Bender, Times/Herald Tallahassee Bureau
In Print: Thursday, December 30, 2010

TALLAHASSEE — Saying corruption is "pervasive at all levels of government,'' a statewide grand jury released a report Wednesday calling for reforms to combat "mismanagement and theft'' by public officials.

"Fraud, waste and abuse of state resources'' punishes taxpayers by driving up the cost of services, the panel said. They called for the repeal of what they dubbed "Florida's Corruption Tax."

The grand jury used the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to underscore the depth of the problem. In that agency, supervisors flagrantly circumvented purchasing rules, a practice that become common knowledge and prompted other employees to act unethically, the panel says.

The panel urges the Florida Legislature to address public corruption in the upcoming session. Among the recommendations in the 127-page report:

• Expand the definition of public employees to include private employees participating in government contracts.

• Require lawmakers to abstain from votes if they stand to gain or lose money as a result of the vote's outcome.

• Authorize the Ethics Commission to initiate investigations and give it the power to levy fines of up to $100,000.

• Require the governor, lieutenant governor and each Cabinet member to put all their private financial interests into blind trusts.

• Strengthen bid tampering rules by, among other things, banning the practice of splitting bids into smaller work orders to avoid the competitive bid process.

• Ban for life any contractor or vendor from doing business with the state if the person has been convicted of a public theft or procurement crime.

• Ban so-called "three-pack" political advertisements that allow political parties to pay for ads that candidates do not have to report as expenditures.

• Require candidates to live in a district when they announce their intention to run for office.

Much more: http://www.tampabay.com/news/politics/grand-jury-calls-for-reform-citing-pervasive-government-corruption/1142565

I don't see any possibility that the current Republican dominated state legislature or Crook Rick Scott will put any of these recommendations into law. They will continue to gut state government and steal from our taxes and blame it all on "big government".

Government never works under Republican control because they all pretty much ALL crooks.

There are probably more healthcare entities, retirees and Medicare recipients in FL that in most states. They live for doctor visits and monthly checks. Similar things could be said about AZ - another retiree haven. And look how fascistic and baggery AZ is too? This news about Scott was out there - if they chose to listen thru their dripping teabags. Switch off Rush and listen to progressive media or even just read a decent paper. Google, for god's sake.

If old-timers can jump on the slightest news about SS and Medicare, they should have known about this thug. If they got swept up hating the black guy with the non-xtian, non-jewish sounding middle name - they got what they deserved.

Too many times - IMHO - Progressives stop their criticizing after dumping on the wingers and the enabling winger media. But I personally have decided everyday men and women, in my community, in my work, family - are just as toxic and selfish as the national celebrities. That's why Fox and Rush and their ilk ARE celebrities - and Florida is a big incubator.

52. One exception
Los Angeles mayor Anthony Villaraigosa is more of a corporatist asshat than a Democat.

But still, I'm so glad CA didn't buy into the tea party bullshit.

And now he is a governor. This is what happens when money walks. They hang around to do even more damage.

Or that that party WANTS to come back to life?

64. Ex South Floridian here, and I weep for Florida
First off - :wtf: happened to Florida? We used to have Lawton Chiles, Claude Pepper. While never as liberal as, say, the West Coast, etc. at least South Florida had many great Dems representing it.

Second - so, the jerk offs in Florida are just now realizing they may have made their lives more scary/miserable/unaffordable by voting in this dude? Why now? There are lots and lots of ways to find out about a candidate nowadays- one does not have to rely on finding a brochure by The League of Women Voters anymore to see where a candidate stands or what he or she stands for. Take five secs and Google it, ferchrissakes.

So, it's hard to have sympathy. I was thinking about re-locating back home to South Florida, and now I am not looking for a job there anymore. Worse off, Alan West now represents my old area! THAT is unbelievable to me! For your hair stylist - why didn't YOU tell her about Scott before he was voted in? Wow. Why would YOU have to do that?! Can't she find out important stuff for herself about, oh, I don't know, if a CROOK and a right-wing nut fascist wants to run my state for four f-ing years?

Goodbye, Florida. I hope the strong willed Dems and other sane folks help stave off some of the damage this man will, undoubtedly, do to the state at all levels- prisons, universities, public schools, hospitals, libraries, everything.

stage a recall??!!!

1) Wait 3 months or so for him to get even more unpopular
2) Start a slick petition drive
3) Get Bill Nelson to agree to become Governor
4) Upon the recall, and Nelson's victory in the Governor's race, have him appoint Sink to the Senate.

Hey...it worked for them in California

job but we expect them to. Why was it that the DNC could not help get the word out, even these Republicans knew Scott would
be a nightmare for Floridians. They should have pulled out all the stops for crying out loud.

Just look at some of the material that was available to them at the time:

Hispanic Republicans on the radio for Sink
Three Hispanic Republicans -- Miami-Dade School Board Member Raquel Regalado, economist Tony Villamil and state Sen. Alex Villalobos -- have cut Spanish-language radio ads for Democratic gubernatorial nominee Alex Sink.

The ads were produced by Freddy Balsera, who advised President Obama on Hispanic media in the 2008 campaign. Here's the text:

Hi, I’m Raquel Regalado, and I’m supporting Alex Sink for Governor because we have things in common…both her children, and mine, attended – and attend – public schools. And because we agree that education needs to be a top priority. Alex Sink recognizes the important role education plays to create jobs. She has committed to me that she will improve our public education system. That’s why, in this case, our children’s education matters more than political parties. I ask you for your vote for Alex Sink for Governor.

I’m Economist Tony Villamil. I know how Florida’s economy functions because I was Director of Economic Affairs under Jeb Bush. As an economist, I have compared Alex Sink’s and Rick Scott’s plans and can I tell you with confidence that Alex Sink has the best program to develop new industries and create jobs. She was a successful businesswoman for 26 years who knows how to strengthen our economy. That’s why my family and I are voting for Alex Sink for Governor.

I’m Senator Alex Villalobos. Even though we belong to different parties, Alex Sink and I have worked closely to combat fraud. That’s why I am so concerned that Rick Scott won’t say why his company was fined 1.5 billion dollars for fraud…the highest fine in history. Today we need transparent leaders that will stimulate the economy, support our public schools and support our small businesses – irrespective of their party. That’s why my family and I are voting for Alex Sink for Governor.
