Students Occupying Chancellor's Office - Protesting Walker's UW-Madison Spinoff Plan
Edited on Tue Apr-26-11 05:27 PM by eowyn_of_rohan
MADISON, Wis. -- University of Wisconsin-Madison students and campus community members have begun an occupation of Bascom Hall following a rally Tuesday afternoon at the chancellor's office protesting tuition increases and the chancellor's New Badger Partnership proposal.

Chancellor Biddy Martin has been pushing her plan for the New Badger Partnership, which would spin off UW-Madison from the rest of the UW System.

Gov. Scott Walker included the split in his budget proposal. Under his proposal, UW-Madison would have its own board of trustees and have more leeway on purchasing, construction, money management and tuition.

The Student Labor Action Coalition organized the protest. The student protesters said they view the New Badger Partnership proposal as a radical restructuring of UW-Madison "from one of the nation's leading public universities to a corporate-controlled private institution."

They are also protesting Walker's proposed $125 million cut to UW-Madison

YES! :yourock: I hope hundreds more join in.

1. How many are there?
I hope this is successful. I am going to contact my daughter and see if her former roommate is there. She is nearly through getting her PhD at UW-Madison. She is another of those people who will be leaving the state if Walker gets his way. She won't be able to afford to stay there. My daughter feels the same way. The brain drain is beginning.

4. We need students to occupy chancellor offices across the UW system
The break would be bad for Madison but disastrous for the schools in the system.

10. That is a great idea... yes - it would blow apart our university system
just breaks my heart as a 3rd gen UW Madison grad, and my siblings attended Stevens Point (I went a year there, too and loved it), Whitewater, and Platteville. My grandma and her 2 sisters went to Oshkosh when it was the Normal School --- We can't let Walker and his boys do this to our schools...

6. Solidarity with the Badger students!
I want these guys to get involved like I was back in the day. The unions need to get involved with them. We're ALL in this together.

7. We've been waiting a long time for the student population to rise up again
This is a good sign.
