Up until now I've just been assuming that this was just another example of the typical right-wing MO: propose something so outrageous that later on, your slightly-less-outrageous "compromise" proposal seems sane in comparison. But so many people are discussing this as if it might seriously happen.

They can't REALLY do that, can they?

Gov. Walker's actions really aren't that big a surprise.

Dismantling Medicare, in contrast, is something that wasn't really on anybody's radars until Ryan's plan. If political discourse continues to trend towards stupid over the next decade this may emerge as a threat, but there's no chance the current government will pass a Medicare voucher plan, and any claim to the contrary only distorts the assessment of our political environment thereby undermining our ability to tackle the current set of threats.
