1. All anybody gets is a copy of what is in the vital records books. |
|
I put genealogy online for my county and at the Register of Deeds here where the vital records are kept, there is an index to look up the volume and page number of the birth/death/marriage record and ledgers that the certificates are kept in. A copy of the certificate has been sent by the Register of Deeds office to the state health department for their records. For newer certificates, only a relative or the person on the certificate can order a copy. For older certificates, copies can be obtained by researchers. Both kinds have a fee to pay for the copy.

6. The number of VR offices that even bother keeping the books around is dwindling rapidly. |
|
Part of the RealID Act provided federal funding for the digitization of vital records, and many states are rapidly converting paper and microfiche originals into digital copies. My local Vital Records office doesn't keep ANY paper copies of ANYTHING around anymore. Paper originals are immediately scanned and digitized, and fed into the shredder.
Within the next 10-15 years I expect to see a push to eliminate handwritten birth certificates completely. Right now, in many areas, we print a form, fill it out by hand, and then scan it back into the computer. It makes far more sense to just skip the paper step, and enter the data into the computer directly. When someone actually NEEDS a birth certificate for something, the computer can generate it on the fly.
