Best critique of an Ayn Rand work I've seen to date...
lifted from a status on Facebook. Succinct but on target.

“There are two novels that can transform a bookish 14-year-kld’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish daydream that can lead to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood in which large chunks of the day are spent inventing ways to make real life more like a fantasy novel. The other is a book about orcs.”

3. It has always bothered me that Ayn Rand used a serial killer
and depraved mutilator of a 12 year old girl as the bases for her heroes in her books.

I just can't get past that.

4. Actually
the other book is really about Hobbits. Orcs are just a part of it... elves and dwarves too.

6. K&R
The 'book about orcs' is also about loyalty, camaraderie, the interrelationship of all life- and how people of all types banded together to fight the evil abuse of power Randians love so much.

7. The actual quote comes from a blogger known as "Kung Fu Monkey"...
...and reads: "There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs."
