NWS TOR bulletin set to expire at noon. BTW, I'm in Harnett County
FB pal said there's some kind of incident over on Fort Bragg. Nothing on the tv about it so far.

So far, it's wind gusts and our tornado watch is due to expire soon. Looks like the bad thunderstorms are also going to miss us.

And not the house itself and no injuries. Gotta find the good in the bad.
I noticed they just extended the TOR warning until 2. The way the fronts keep coming up, might make for a long, interesting day.
Stay safe in Chapel Hill!!

Tornado did some major damage to the town of Cartersville just up the road from my town of Woodstock. Fortunately, it skipped over Woodstock as I was prepared for the worst.

We are in area of state that got missed by all the nightmarish events, I could only sit and watch, online, live local tv out of Tuscaloosa and of Birmingham as they broadcast the tornadoes bearing down on them.
The check in thread is a good idea. I know several DU folks in a few states, was pm'ing them for status.

8. We're under tornado watch here in Chapel Hill, NC. |
|
Edited on Thu Apr-28-11 09:39 AM by mnhtnbb
Have relatives in White, Georgia, who slept in their basement last night. Subdivision north of them about a mile was hit... by a tornado...relatives are all ok.
I ushered last night at a PlayMakers Theatre performance here in Chapel Hill of Joan Didion's "The Year of Magical Thinking". One of the other male ushers got a call from his brother in Alabama--didn't hear where--who reported his house was gone from a tornado.
Hubby and I were at the ballet in Raleigh on April 16th when an EF-3 tornado went over our heads. Came out to see trees down everywhere. Heard the route to get on freeway was a mess, so we worked our way home a different way. That was the day tornadoes hit all over NC.

damage here in coastal MS. The winds were unusually high down here and there was a problem with sand from the beach blowing on to Hwy 90. I found an article that lists the counties where a state of emergency was declared, and almost all of them are located in central and northern MS. MS has 82 counties and a state of emergency has been declared in 39 of those counties. Here's a link to the best information I can find this morning: http://www.clarionledger.com/article/20110428/NEWS01/104280355/32-die-Mississippi-after-2-days-severe-storms?odyssey=mod|defcon|text|Home

Is it selfish to also feel bad over the loss of property even though it's not nearly as terrible as the deaths. I keep thinking of the poor people or people with no insurance and how difficult it will be to recover after they've lost everything.

a tornado had just destroyed his home--that at least it was just a house, but that it's NOT JUST a house. Having had my home destroyed by fire almost 4 years ago, believe me, losing everything can be a significant source of pain and stress for a long time going forward.

|
We lost our home to fire in '05. For all intents and purposes we lost everything. What the fire didn't get, the smoke, water and theft finished off. Our loss included pets but no humans, thankfully. Since that day forward, I can feel the pain these people go through, it's like you've lost your security/safe place/treasure trove/reality.
Horrible feeling and you'll never forget it. To this day, it's difficult to look at the remnants of someone's home and wonder how they will deal with all the losses involved.

survived--including pets. It made it more difficult, when less than a year and then 18 months later, we lost our beloved Tanya and Mouse to age and cancer, because we had always said, 'at least we all survived'.

back to my hometown in the Alleghany mountains of Va. We had funnel clouds here last night, high winds, heavy rain, and lightening, but no touch down on the ground. I'm 65 years old, and with one exception, have never seen tornados or funnel clouds in this area.
CNN is reporting that there are 8 deaths in southern Va from the storms last night, but didn't list the counties that were hit.

I'm fine, thanks for thinking about me. The southern counties in Mississippi haven't had any rain in so long my yard is cracking (not the whole yard, parts of it). We had winds that put way to much sand on the highway but that is all we got, thank goodness.

I just want to give people a place to connect. And honestly, I am shocked by the death and destruction. 200+ dead in a natural disaster in the US doesn't happen often. I looked and this will probably end up in the top 25 deadliest natural disasters in US history. Think about that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_disasters_by_death_toll
