9. I'm pretty sure that has to do with the venue
...and whoever is in charge of running the sounds system at those events.

In all the 2008 campaigning, I only heard it played once and I cringed.

Only a clueless fool like, oh say, Ronald Reagan, would choose to have that song associated with their campaign for political office in America.

I just went and listened to your link.
Heard that song 100s of times when watching 100s of Obama rallies,
I just got confused for a minute on the title ;)

Edited to add:

2008: Barack Obama: "Yes We Can" (will.i.am featuring various artists), "Better Way" (Ben Harper), "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours" (Stevie Wonder), "City of Blinding Lights" (U2), "Higher and Higher" (Jackie Wilson), "Think" (Aretha Franklin), "The Rising" (Bruce Springsteen), "Only in America" (Brooks & Dunn)

31. Here a list from wikipedia - but I think some are probably missing

2008: John McCain: "Take Us Out" by Jerry Goldsmith, "Take A Chance On Me" (ABBA), "Our Country" (John Mellencamp), "Raisin' McCain" (John Rich)

2008 primary candidates:
Hillary Clinton: "You and I" (Celine Dion), "Takin' Care of Business" by Bachman–Turner Overdrive, "9 to 5" by Dolly Parton and "American Girl" by Tom Petty
Chris Dodd: "Get Ready" and "Reach Out I'll Be There" by The Temptations
John Edwards: "Our Country" by John Mellencamp
Rudy Giuliani: Take Us Out by Jerry Goldsmith (theme from "Rudy") and "Rudie Can't Fail" by The Clash
Mike Huckabee: "More Than A Feeling" by Boston (Tom Scholz of Boston asked Huckabee to stop using the song)

33. A few more that told McCain to STOP using their songs

"Still the One" by John Hall
http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2008/06/13/4436027-rep-to-mccain-stop-using-my-song

"My Hero" by the Foo Fighters
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/08/foo-fighters-tell-mccain_n_133104.html

"Running on Empty" - Jackson Browne sued McCain and the Ohio GOP sued McCain and the Ohio Republican Party for the Ohio GOP's use of his song
http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/09/liberal-rock-st.html

"Right Now" - Van Halen took issue with the McCain campaign's use of the song
http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/09/liberal-rock-st.html

"Our Country" - John Mellencamp had his publicist Bob Merlis write the McCain campaign to suggest it might be better if McCain stopped playing "Our Country" at McCain rallies, given Mellencamp's liberal views and endorsement of former Sen. John Edwards, D-NC.

34. I think I'd confused "little pink houses" with "our country."
In any case, McCain should avoid songs with the word "Country" in them.

12. Have you READ THE LYRICS?
Born down in a dead man's town
The first kick I took was when I hit the ground
You end up like a dog that's been beat too much
'Til you spend half your life just covering up

Born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.

I got in a little hometown jam
And so they put a rifle in my hands
Sent me off to Vietnam
To go and kill the yellow man

Come back home to the refinery
Hiring man says "Son if it was up to me"
I go down to see the V.A. man
He said "Son don't you understand"

I had a buddy at Khe Sahn
Fighting off the Viet Cong
They're still there, he's all gone
He had a little girl in Saigon
I got a picture of him in her arms

Down in the shadow of the penitentiary
Out by the gas fires of the refinery
I'm ten years down the road
Nowhere to run, ain't got nowhere to go

I'm a long gone Daddy in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
I'm a cool rocking Daddy in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.

16. Please, NO!
Kerry used a lot of Springsteen in his 2004 campaign, and when he folded his tent after the election, I couldn't listen to him again for about two years.

Besides, this would be more appropriate.

37. Just play it ONCE at the convention
And let it go at that. But as a campaign song expressing a central theme as to WHY voters should re-elect the President for a second term? It wouldn't even pass the laugh test!

would make quite a fitting song for this next election cycle.
