The Royal Wedding On Every News Station Sucks!!!
The Royal Wedding On Every News Station Sucks!!!

How is it that news for America stops because two rich kids from another country decide to get married?

13. Which is why I'm avoiding the television AT LEAST until Tuesday. It's not....
Prince William or Kate Middleton's fault I don't want to watch it. It's American media bombarding me with 24/7 crap five months before today. I can't do it. I pulled an all nighter so soon I can sleep through the day and not have to hear about it.

7. Other more important crap
If this were not on my TV, maybe I could find out if they've found more survivors from the tornadoes in Mississippi, Arkansas, or Alabama. To me...a royal wedding isn't news, it's entertainment. It may even be grand entertainment, but it ain't news. I could even understand (a wee bit more), if today was Saturday. But, on a work day morning, this isn't what should pass for news. Maybe a blurb...or two, and then you rerun the whole thing later...when no one is waking up to see the news of the day.

To me, and probably only me, the wall to wall coverage on a Friday morning on every news channel sucked! And, if this crap really excites America to the degree that every single station felt compelled to cover it, no wonder our economy sucks, as well.

But, honestly, I don't know which is worse.

3. i am glad no one needs actual news before they go to work. i guess there probably
is no new news, but come on!! Isn't that why instead of having new media stations with the extra digital channels we just gave them to the people that already have them!! Couldn't they have had the wedding on one of the other digital channels? a bit ridiculous if you ask me.

9. Not to mention
It almost adds insult to injury...

1) Yes, you're going to lose your home
2) Yes, we'll send your children off to fight in foreign lands for wars we'll start and continue
3) Yes, we're going to make sure you pay a boat load of taxes, while corporations pay little or none
4) Yes, we'll spoil your beaches and wreck your environment
5) No, you can't be ensured of proper health care
6) No, your kids won't be offered a free and appropriate education
7) No, your opinion doesn't really matter on the laws we pass
8) No, your children probably won't be better off than you are...
9) Maybe, we'll let you have a President...after we help trim down a list of acceptable candidates by choosing who can participate in debates or by spinning our coverage
10)...and while you wait, why not watch these rich kids, whose claim to fame is being born (I guess), get married in another country

But don't worry...

1) They'll always have homes paid for by their country
2) Their children won't have to fight in foreign lands unless they decide they want to look like more than rich, spoiled brats
3) Any taxes they pay, will actually be paid for them by the commoners
4) They'll own private beaches and won't have to deal with having them sullied
5) They'll never have to worry about health care
6) They're kids will receive the best education, at their country's expense
7) Laws barely affect them
8) Their children will be better off financially than most of the children in America
9) But, hey, they don't care about our politics, so they don't give a flip about the who occupies our White House.
10) ...and while we wait, if we really good, we can watch the children of these rich kids get married years from now on every television "news" channel

fairytale wedding versus the nightmare of our new reality

12. I just did...
I turned the television off...but, that really wasn't the point...it's not quite the same as...if you don't want to watch a crime show, change the channel and watch another television show. If you really do want to watch the news where do you turn too...if what counts for news ON EVERY SINGLE NEWS CHANNEL IS A ROYAL WEDDING!

Again...that's not the point...

Two people getting married...sure that's news...it's a mention, it's a..."in other news today, Prince William and Kate Middleton were wed today in a ceremony...blah, blah, blah". Wall to wall coverage on news channels seem reasonable? Really? A wedding...really?

I can almost understand this level of bizarre hero worship from the Brits, almost. For this county to be at all interested in a bunch of over-privileged, leeches on society is simply appalling.

Many of them moved to Canada. Many loyalists stayed in this country. Their ancestors live on today. Many of them are Republicans. How's that for generalization? :-)

24. ...And in Other News
The next time you hear about another round of layoffs at a TV news division, the closing of a bureau, the decision not to cover a foreign story with full force, remember this week of silliness in April.

Remember the millions of dollars, hundreds of staff and hours of coverage spent on a wedding in London when crises around the globe and here at home festered. Remember the unseemly pas de deux between the press and a reality TV show huckster peddling racially-fraught falsehoods, as both interviewers and the interviewee seek a bump in ratings.

And then please take a moment to remember the eight American soldiers and one contractor killed by an Afghan soldier at the Kabul airport in a war too easily forgotten. Remember the hundreds likely being killed in Syria and Libya, not to mention the death and unrest plaguing countries like the Ivory Coast, which almost never earn more than a mention on our most-watched newscasts.

Remember those who have the least amongst us, struggling after more than a year of unemployment, a long commute they can no longer afford, or the diagnosis of a medical condition that could kill them and bankrupt their family.

The networks couldn't ignore the devastating storms that killed hundreds in the South, but you had the odd juxtaposition of that news being delivered by anchors sitting in front of Buckingham Palace.

Look at that dress, ladies and gentlemen, they truly are better than....oh wait, sorry ladies and gentlemen, her majesty appears to have sauntered inside meaning the rest of the party will follow and leave us.

"Enough of that common rabble! Now...gin me! *burp"

"Yes, your majesty."

As an American, I could probably never meet one of these "royals" aside from the fact that I am just yankee rabble, but if i did have the opportunity, they'd probably usher me away by security because i dared shake Queen Betty's hand and slapped Prince Billy on the back :eyes:

33. Why do they keep calling the ceremony a "marriage"?
Every news report that I hear on this seems to refer to the "marriage" that occurred this morning. As far as I know, the ceremony is a wedding, and the resulting long-term relationship is a marriage. So when the BBC guy says that 2 billion people witnessed a "marriage" this morning, this is incorrect, is it not? What they witnessed was a "wedding". It would take years, maybe decades, to actually witness a "marriage".

This is the only thing I have found so far that interests me about this event.

42. good point...
Edited on Fri Apr-29-11 11:10 AM by onpatrol98
someone above mentioned turning off the television as well...and I was a bit haughty, but it is actually a very good point...

It's an absolutely gorgeous day here to be outside and active. I think the point that I was trying to make wasn't that televising a wedding isn't a good thing...but in terms of perspective, it just kind of stunk to have it on every single news channel. I wouldn't have cared about it playing all day on a entertainment channel. I wouldn't have cared if the talking heads "mentioned" it all day long...intertwined with other relevant "news".

But, in terms of perspective, I personally didn't think it worthy of wall to wall coverage. Clearly, others did. It just seemed...trivial. I vaguely remember Prince Charles and Princess Diana's wedding. But, their marriage was a disaster.

I couldn't think of a single thing these two kids (no matter how great they are) did to be worthy of wall to wall coverage OTHER THAN TO BE BORN INTO WEALTHY PRIVILEDGED FAMILIES. I actually got an AP News alert on my phone to tell me that they kissed. Really, AP? A newly wedded couple kissing is news?

So, I'm sorry for the rant. It may not seem so, but I enjoy weddings. I love happy couples. For the people who did watch and enjoy the wonderful moment. I'm happy for you.

But, as much as we rant on DU about the wealthy privileged in the world and the disparancies between the have and have nots...I mean...come on...what makes this world wide televised wedding different?
