A British friend just emailed me and said "You stupid Americans care more about this damn farce.... |
|
than we do!".
LOL.....I had to agree with him.
Maybe because we are not exposed to it as much.

Big difference. Yes, we give pensions to retired elected officials. The UK also does that for their elected officials, and that is analogous to what we do. Then they also pay lifetime salary and support to a royal family. We do nothing of the sort.

57. You do know that the "lifetime salary" is a mere pittance to what the |
|
family already has, and it is renumeration for their performing the ceremonial aspects of the nation's diplomacy - the Prime Minister doesn't do the social bullhit, he runs the government. The queen et al are the ones who show up to represent "Britain" at funerals and weddings and supermarket openings.
We, OTOH, elect someone to the senate for one fucking term, and give them a pension for the rest of their lives without them having to do anything for it.
At least THEIR aristocracy expected to do SOMETHING.

60. That is an ignorant statement. Not only do the British royalty do enormous |
|
good, they also bring in much more than they receive in revenue by virtue of the travelers who go to England to see and be a part of a great historic nation. Visitors do not go to see the Prime Minister; they go to see Buckingham Palace and Windsor and all the other grand vistas where the royals live. The British would be foolish to give up this revenue to have a country run by corporations like the USA. And before you comment, yes, I am sure that corporations have power there too. I say do away with the power of big business executives. That should be our focus, not criticizing the Queen and her grandson.

47. But that was not at all the point of your OP. |
|
The OP was about how 'stupid Americans' are paying attention to it, while the Brits don't care at all. Absurd bullshit. An OP about how many in the UK really do not pay it any mind would be of interest, but someone's silly snark about it is not. Of course, your Brit friend is contributing to the wedding with his taxes, because he is still a subject of the crown we sent packing. So what good is 'not giving a crap' if you are still going to pay for the crap? That is a serious question.

53. Actually Pop Idol, the UK original, draws larger viewship on |
|
a regular basis than the US version, in spite of the fact that the US is so much more populated. There are what, 60 million Brits? As many as 11 million watch Pop Idol. A very large percentage of the population. It is a huge hit there. Huge. Much larger than the percentage of Americans who have watched even a final episode.

|
catch a glimpse of their 'betters'? Throngs. Uncountable legions. They look like they are enjoying it. Yesterday there was some poster like this who tried to say that UK was not really covering this on TV, the Americans were doing much more! Hilarious bullshite. Ask your British pal about all the gear, the mementos and trinkets being sold to Brits in Britain. Plates and dishcloths and commemorative cups, tee shrits, caps, you name it, they are buying it in huge amounts. Not much of that here. Like none of it. A recent poll showed 6% of the US has an interest in the wedding. 6%!

49. Filthy streets? Puh-leeze! |
|
I'd bet those streets were swept, scrubbed, and that's after the homeless and panhandlers were rounded up and carted off for the duration.
(that's how U.S. cities prepare for equally-celebrated events, like baseball's all-star game, or the superbowl)
The streets might be a little filthier now that the cavalry escort has passed by.

over. Add hundreds of thousands of people camping on those streets for a day or so, and you get filth. The point is, they are not wrapped up in bed watching on TV, they are on the Street, waiting, sitting on curbs and gutters. London is one of my favorite cities, it is also a tad on the fumey and dirty side. As are all large cities.

the British for a wonderful wedding and a grand and well organized show for all the people there. It was impressive how they moved the excited people from the cathedral to the palace in time for the kiss. If some of you didn't like it, well, all you had to do was not watch, n'est pas?
