Nesting mallard rules roost at Ohio supermarket

A mother mallard sits on her eggs at the main entrance of the Giant Eagle

A female mallard duck is nesting atop bags of mulch just outside the main entrance of a Giant Eagle store in Medina in northeast Ohio.
A small sign advises shoppers to beware of the bird and to grab their mulch from another pile.

The Akron Beacon Journal reports the duck is sitting on at least 10 eggs in a nest assembled on top of an 8-foot stack of bags. Store officials think she laid the eggs a couple of weeks ago.

4. I just hope they give the babies a way to get down from
the pile without having to dive bomb to the cement floor.

6. I love that she picked a market called "Giant Eagle"
how fitting.

Hopefully SHE is the first thing her babies see or some shopper is going home with some extra ducks.

12. Not sure what this says about sanitation levels in the store - if mama duck
felt like her babies would have enough food when they hatch. Pretty sure that ducklings start eating insects on their own pretty quickly.

That aside, it is kind of cute.

15. Giant Eagle follows HACCP protocols.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hazard_Analysis_and_Critical_Control_Points

They rigorously monitor store cleanliness and food safety.

Violate those protocols and it will get you terminated.

I'm fairly certain this was given the OK at the very highest corporate level.

13. We have a nesting pair of mallards right outside the front door.
They've grown accustomed to our (relatively) quiet battery-powered mower and the twice daily trips to get the morning paper and the mail. If I get pics I'll post them.
