Poll question: Vietnam Veterans: Did any major movie capture your experience?
Edited on Fri Apr-29-11 03:24 PM by Mike 03
This morning I watched APOCALYPSE NOW for the first time in four or five years. It made me wonder which, if any, of the major films about the Viet Nam War captured the experience as far as the people, the soldiers, who were actually there.

These are the major films that come to mind, although I'm sure I'm missing many. Please forgive me; I realize this poll, although it is important to me, is sort of off the cuff.

1. Hamburger Hill.
It captured the horrific cost of the pointless taking and then giving back of real estate. It also offered a pretty damned accurate portrait of close quarters combat.

2. Hamburger Hill is considered to be very accuarte
Not a vet personally but a film enthusiast.

Boys in Company C is OK but not a really great film. Interesting mostly because R. Lee Ermey played a DI in it before Full Metal Jacket.

I always viewed Full Metal Jacket as being more a satire of america's love of war than about Vietnam particularly.

Was good also....
Platoon pretty much scared the shit out of me the 1st time I saw it.... It was just too much like my experience.
Full Metal Jacket was great in the boot camp part. Too real!

8. Good Morning Vietnam
Of course I was in the USAF and found Robin Williams' role just non-conformist enough to remember the same sort of stuff had occurred where I was.

But that's just me.
