Indiana DUers- you have my condolences RE Planned Parenthood
http://enews.earthlink.net/article/top?guid=20110429/b45bdb73-0ed2-44c2-bdd1-46ea39a5d2aa

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels said Friday he will sign restrictive abortion legislation and make Indiana the first state to cut off all government funding for Planned Parenthood, a move likely to boost his credentials among social conservatives as he considers whether to run for president.

Daniels said he supported the abortion restrictions from the outset and that the provision added to defund Planned Parenthood did not change his mind. He said women's health, family planning and other services will remain available.

"The principle involved commands the support of an overwhelming majority of Hoosiers," Daniels said in a statement announcing his intention to sign the bill when it arrives on his desk in about a week.

But the measure also puts Daniels' state at risk of losing $4 million a year in federal family planning grants likely to be cut off because of the legislation. Daniels, known as a fiscal hawk, did not address the loss in his statement.

1. I wonder whether they will allow people to cross state lines
since they have drummed that drum ad infinitum.

7. My uncle lived in Indiana about 20 miles
from the state border. When he wanted to buy beer for a Sunday BBQ, he crossed over into Illinois. We went many a time into Pa. to buy fireworks, where it was banned in NY. When abortion was illegal in New Jersey, women crossed the state border into New York where it was legal.

How do they plan to keep people from going to other states for "illegal/immoral" purposes? Require a pregnancy test before and when entering the state?

2. It's not about budgets. It's not about deficits.
It's about spending money where THEY want to spend it and pandering to their base.

6. Actually, Daniels has been pretty consistent about his budget. Everyone is hurting.
Planned Parenthood, anti-gay marriage, anti-immigrants, etc etc have been playing to the base.

He'll have hard time winning the middle-of-the-road voters, however, when he runs for president.

12. His bigger problem may be that he looks like a garden gnome
and talks like Larry Bird.

14. I don't recall the Larry Bird accent, but Mitch is a wee one. His stature won't help.

15. If you listen to him speak off the cuff, especially,
it really comes out. It's pretty disconcerting.

3. Throw the bums out. throw all of them out. Start from scratch.
Citizen politicians only. 70 % of the nation wants Roe V, Wade on the books. No one likes abortion, and this is still how people feel.

Get busy, get rid of these people who make decisions against the will of the voter. Throw them out NOW if you can.

4. Daniels is making his pitch to run for President. Get to know him.
As for the state, the combined disaster of a GOP legislature and governor has us all reeling. Only the knuckledraggers are happy now.

9. Head up I-65 for about an hour.
This is such a bad time for Indiana. It's appalling. I have friends getting back in the job market to get out of here just because of the political climate.

10. Lafayette?
I agree that it is rotten here in Indiana. I hope that things get better but I don't see it happening soon. I've been eager to get to know like minded people here in Indiana. Sometimes, this state feels like sheer progressive hell!

13. We have pockets of progressives, but we're definitely surrounded and outnumbered.
And woe is me! Our little blue collar community with a conservative rag of a newspaper. Sigh. I don't want to betray any secrets, but Purdue ain't exactly Berkeley of the Midwest when it comes to politics. ;)

20. THAT would probably be Bloomington
Marion County isn't horrid- but all the elected Republicans in the state come here to the statehouse to ruin things for everybody else. :puke: I'd die for some good progressive talk radio. The only "sane" talk radio shows available here in Indy are Newstalk 1430 in the morning (Abdul- who seems to be a moderate Republican but isn't a teabagger), Smerconish at noon (moderate/libertarian national talk host-used to be Republican but voted for Obama), and Colmes in the late evening. Otherwise, it's wall-to-wall hate radio-Limbaugh, Beck, Savage, Hannity, Boortz, et. al. My only outlet are progressive podcasts.

11. Why does Mitch Daniels hate women?
Because that's what it all boils down to.. giving women less rights over their own body. I'm glad Daniels is making his position clear on this issue.

17. Fellow Hoosier here...
Sad times indeed.

"He said women's health, family planning and other services will remain available."

Paid for by ???

We live in a school district that will know next week whether or not they can continue to provide bus transportation, due to Mitch's screwing around with property taxes. If the referendum fails to pass, our property values will plummet.

Ass hat. I will be so glad when he's gone. Unfortunately, the damage he's done will remain. Looking forward to moving out of here after retirement.

18. My property taxes dropped literally 60%
under Mitch and the crackpot legislature and it's not like they were onerously high to begin with. Of course most of my clueless neighbors thought this was awesome, yet they don't understand why we have no money for schools and city services.
