Oddest quote about the tornado...
...a lady was interviewed and said "I heard someone trapped in the wreckage whining for help".

Whining? That's the word you wanted to use? Really?

How about moaning for help or crying out for help?

But then this was a resident of the town and I'm sure she was under a lot of stress that day.

2. To me whining
is complaining, but I suppose there are other definitions, it's just not what I would use.

8. I see what you mean. "are we there yet are we there yet" vs "help me" It's been quite a
few days for those involved.

10. Sorry, but whining is what DUer's do about the rec/un-rec function on DU.
Someone buried in rubble is not whining nor are they a whiner.

:wtf:

4. Like the other person above me said...
It could have been whining.

One definition for whining is:

1whine
verb \ˈhwīn, ˈwīn\
whinedwhin·ing
Definition of WHINE
intransitive verb
1
a : to utter a high-pitched plaintive or distressed cry

What's wrong with that?

6. But it's not a common
definition, at least not in my experience.

Whine: to complain or protest in a childish fashion.

15. by saying it's the most common definition
you mean it comes up as the first definition. But then you see
their examples of it being used in a sentence and the first 5 of 6
show it in the useage I would say is most common.

Examples of WHINE
He's always whining about the weather.
Quit whining and finish your dinner.
“I want to leave now,” she whined.
The workers were whining that the office was too cold.
The dog was whining because it wanted to go out.
The electric saw whined as it cut through the wood.

14. Odd word to use but
Edited on Fri Apr-29-11 11:14 PM by bigwillq
people often misuse the english language. And, as you said, stress probably played a role.

Like me, who just had to edit because I spelled two words wrong.

16. I always thought the oddest quote when it comes to tornados is "It sounds like a freight train"
Edited on Sat Apr-30-11 09:59 AM by Shagbark Hickory
REally?! Have you heard a freight train lately?
They really don't make a lot of noise unless you're talking about the horns. And I don't think tornados sound like train horns.
Aside from that, it's more like a low rumble and light thumping over the seams in the rails.
