(7,813 posts)I saw a documentary a few months ago about NK. In one scene, the North Koreans made a big show about how their office workers used PCs - but they made the mistake of letting them film the screens - all blank. There were no lights on in the room. A government office didn't have electricity.
If North Koreans had freedom of internet, TV, radio, news from the outside world, I think that they would rather live like South Koreans. As it is, they don't even know where Gangnam is, let alone what style it has.

(3,335 posts)movies were being smuggled in from SK and the government knew about them. (This is where they learn about the world outside of NK.) The documentary said that the government knew about the problem but had made a decision to ignore it for now. I guess the people who viewed these movies got some enjoyment in their miserable lives from the bootledge movies, not anger so the NK let it go for now. Perhaps when they start embedding food commercials in the movies and they find out that the people eat well in SK, that will be the straw that breaks the camel's back.

(18,641 posts)And I read that tourists also have access to the real internet.
Someone there has to have it to publish the North Korean news and monitor what's being said about them.
I also heard there is a separate North Korea only propaganda based internet for the upper class Koreans.

(89,264 posts)people are controlled from both ends.
in many other countries with limited freedoms it's not as controlled so it's easier to get things in and out.
but NK is different.

(51,627 posts)last week. The citizens are brainwashed and poor. The propaganda begins at birth and reminded me of Nazi Germany and the USSR. They are completely closed off from the rest of the world. Here is the link.
