The first January 6 committee hearing was a searing indictment of the GOP's lies

(Business Insider) The first hearing held by the House select committee investigating the January 6 insurrection exemplified why Republicans have pushed so hard against a probe into the Capitol attack. The hearing was a disaster for Republicans. It was an emotionally raw indictment of former President Donald Trump and his GOP defenders.

The four police officers who were called to testify on their experiences defending the Capitol repeatedly slammed GOP efforts to whitewash the insurrection. They called out Republicans who portray themselves as pro-law enforcement but won't fully acknowledge the violence officers were subjected to on January 6. And they explicitly blamed the insurrection on Trump at a time when the GOP continues to defer to the twice-impeached president like party's Supreme Leader.

Jamie Raskin Confronts GOP Rep. Andrew Clyde for Comparing Rioters to Tourists

(Mediaite) During a House Rules Committee meeting on Tuesday night, Congressman Jamie Raskin (D- MD) directly confronted Congressman Andrew Clyde (R- GA) on his comments about January 6th after testimony from four Capitol Police officers. Clyde rather infamously said in May that if you looked at footage from January 6 without knowing what it was, “you would actually think it was a normal tourist visit.”

Liz Cheney urges investigation of Trump's 'every phone call' on Jan. 6

(New York Times) Representative Liz Cheney, Republican of Wyoming, issued a defiant challenge to her own party on Tuesday as a special House committee began its inquiry into the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, saying that the riot would remain a “cancer on our constitutional republic” if Congress failed to hold accountable those who were responsible.

In stern opening remarks, Ms. Cheney, one of just two House Republicans willing to serve on the panel, dared her colleagues to support a full investigation into the worst attack on Congress in centuries.

“Will we be so blinded by partisanship that we throw away the miracle of America?” Ms. Cheney asked. “Do we hate our political adversaries more than we love our country and revere our Constitution?”

Gym Jordan is in some serious trouble

(The Guardian) Liz Cheney, who Pelosi has appointed to the select committee, and was stripped of her position as chair of the House Republican Conference in an effort led by Jordan, said McCarthy named Jordan to the committee in order to sabotage it.

The questions that Jordan may be asked if he were to testify would cover his knowledge and involvement in the planning, organization and funding of the insurrection, as well as his participation in the concerted effort to prevent the constitutional certification of the presidential election and the propagation of Trump’s “big lie” that the election was a fraud and stolen.

House Republicans pull out of another key select committee in a sign of 1/6 panel fallout

(CNN) House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has pulled out all six Republicans designated to serve on a key select committee on the economy, three sources tell CNN, a sign of the fallout among House Republicans over being vetoed from the panel investigating the January 6 insurrection. None of McCarthy’s initial appointments to the select committee on Economic Disparity and Fairness in Growth will be joining that committee’s first meeting this week, a lawmaker familiar with the committee told CNN.

DC Attorney General Moves Ahead With Trump Inauguration Suit

(Daily Beast) The attorney general for the District of Columbia will continue investigating whether Donald Trump’s 2017 inauguration committee misspent more than $1 million, after discussions to resolve the matter out of court stalled this month. The AG’s office has a civil lawsuit against the inaugural committee and the Trump Organization.

And this month, the case was forced into mediation, a deal-making session in which a neutral negotiator tries to get different sides to come to an agreement. While lawyers met on July 14 to discuss resolving the case out of court, the meeting went nowhere. According to court records, the closed-door meeting resulted in “no agreement reached.” The reason: Investigators are dead set on seeing this case through to the very end, a source with knowledge of the case told The Daily Beast.
