Clarence Thomas Secretly Participated in Koch Network Donor Events

(ProPublica) On Jan. 25, 2018, dozens of private jets descended on Palm Springs International Airport. Some of the richest people in the country were arriving for the annual winter donor summit of the Koch network, the political organization founded by libertarian billionaires Charles and David Koch. A long weekend of strategizing, relaxation in the California sun and high-dollar fundraising lay ahead. Just after 6 p.m., a Gulfstream G200 jet touched down on the tarmac. One of the Koch network’s most powerful allies was on board: Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

Russian State TV Praises Kevin McCarthy For Zelensky Snub

(Meidas Touch) Russian state TV is absolutely delighted about Speaker Kevin McCarthy's decision to not allow Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to address a joint session of Congress. RT, the English language Russian media propaganda outlet said in a piece on McCarthy Thursday, "while backing Ukraine against Russia remains a popular position for Republicans, there are growing signs of pushback against maintaining the current level of assistance." They then played a clip of McCarthy saying, "is Zelensky a member of Congress? Is he our President? I don't think I have to commit anything."

Hakeem Jeffries tells House Republicans, 'We're not paying the ransom note'

(Daily Kos) On Thursday, House Republicans were unable to get themselves together and agree to debate a military funding bill, to say nothing of a continuing resolution to avert a government shutdown. Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries held a press conference to make sure the message to the American people is clear: This will be the “unnecessary Republican shutdown of government.” This is an inherent problem with the Republican Party’s inability to govern.

Government shutdown could slow House Republicans' Biden impeachment inquiry

(Reuters) The looming U.S. government shutdown that some hardline Republicans, including Donald Trump, are cheering for could slow one of their other priorities: The recently launched impeachment inquiry of Democratic President Joe Biden. Republican House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy launched the inquiry on Sept. 12, an escalation after months of probes into Biden's son, Hunter Biden, with the first hearing set for Sept. 28 -- just two days before the shutdown deadline.

Ron DeSantis has a problem: Covid vaccine skepticism isn't moving GOP voters

(Politico) Ron DeSantis rose to national fame as the Covid-skeptical governor of Florida — giving voice to people frustrated by lockdowns, wary of facemasks and irate over vaccine mandates. Now, with cases on the rise, the embattled DeSantis is leaning into his COVID strategy again. But this time Republicans don’t seem to care as much. “Covid restrictions have gone from a dominant issue that got talked about all the time in the focus groups to one that never comes up. People just don’t talk about it anymore,” said Sarah Longwell, an anti-Trump Republican strategist who routinely conducts focus groups. “Covid cost [DeSantis] one of his calling cards.”

'Waiting for him to drop out': DeSantis' influence nosedives in Florida

(Politico) College boards, stacked with DeSantis appointees, are rejecting job candidates with ties to the governor. The chair of the Republican Party of Florida urged executive committee members to attend all GOP candidate events — giving cover to party faithful who want to attend a dinner at Mar-a-Lago with former President Donald Trump. And the board that oversees many of Florida’s affordable housing programs this month placed on leave its executive director, who was helped into the job by a top DeSantis adviser.

US judge will not block Biden rule on socially conscious investing

(Reuters) A federal judge in Texas on Thursday rejected a bid by 25 states to block a Biden administration rule allowing employee retirement plans to consider environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues in investment decisions. U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk in Amarillo, Texas, declined to block the rule, which took effect Jan. 30. The judge granted a petition by President Joe Biden's administration to dismiss the Republican-led states' lawsuit claiming the rule will jeopardize millions of Americans' retirement savings.
