Biden's stimulus checks bill could cut your taxes by $3,100
(MoneyWise) Congress has put the stimulus package on a fast track in a race against time to get Americans the relief they need. Along with the long-discussed stimulus checks, additional proposals in the bill would offer the average household $3,100 in tax savings for 2021, according to Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center.
In the bill, families will see savings from four major provisions: Your $1,400 stimulus check, which is actually just an advance on a tax credit. An expanded income tax credit. An expanded child tax credit. A bigger credit for those paying for child care.
The GOP might oppose one of the most popular bills in decades. How risky is that?
(Washington Post) Republicans have seemingly found themselves on the very wrong side of some big legislative battles in recent years. The tax cut package they pushed through in 2018, for instance, polled among the most unpopular bills passed — if not the most unpopular — in decades. Their 2017 effort to replace the Affordable Care Act was even more historically unpopular, with support falling as low as the teens in some polls (before Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona ended it with his thumbs-down).
And it would seem to be happening again, with Republican leaders pushing for their party to unite against President Biden’s hugely popular coronavirus stimulus bill. Some are characterizing this as a huge risk.
GOP calls Biden's first 100 days a failure -- just 36 days in
(American Independent) Math is not the Republican Party's strong suit. The Republican National Committee complained on Thursday that President Joe Biden has not kept his promise to reopen most schools in the first 100 days of his presidency. He has only been on the job for 36 days.
'Worshipping the golden jackass': CPAC mocked for displaying giant gold Trump statue
(Raw Story) The Conservative Political Action Conference is set to begin this weekend, and early indications are that much of it will be dedicated to worshipping former President Donald Trump. In fact, as a video posted by Bloomberg News' William Turton shows, CPAC will even feature a literal gold statue of the former twice-impeached one-term president, who will also be a keynote speaker at the event.
A Japanese Cult That Believes Its Leader Is an Alien From Venus Is Speaking at CPAC
(Vice) The lineup of the Conservative Political Action Conference this week includes political heavyweights like former President Donald Trump, Cancun-loving Sen. Ted Cruz, and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. It also includes the political head of a Japanese religious cult that promotes nationalism, xenophobia and the belief that its leader is the reincarnation of an alien from Venus who created life on earth millions of years ago.
On Friday afternoon at the Hyatt Regency Orlando, Hiroaki “Jay” Aeba, a prominent Japanese conservative, will address CPAC about the threat China poses to the U.S., taking a prime spot in the lineup just after Donald Trump Jr.
Democrats Crushing GOP on Social Media
(Political Wire) “In a swift reversal from 90 days ago, Democrats are now the ones with overpowering social media muscle and the ability to drive news,” Axios reports. “Former President Donald Trump’s digital exile and the reversal of national power has turned the tables on which party can keep a stranglehold on online conversation.”
White supremacist presence within military detailed in new Pentagon report
(The Independent) A new Pentagon report on extremism has revealed that several white supremacists have been active in the US military. The report, obtained by Roll Call, which was commissioned by Congress and dated October 2020, details instances of former military personnel speaking openly about their white supremacist views while serving.
