I RARELY do this, but I need to send a shout out to a DUer

Last edited Wed Oct 23, 2024, 02:04 PM - Edit history (1)

The DUer is Wednesdays. For months, Wednesdays has been posting a daily self-prepared election guide. It's always full of useful information. I've included it on the home page from time to time, but now we're in the final stretch I'm going to try to get it on there every day.

If you have not seen these guides, you should check them out and give them a rec. It would be great to try and get this information shared more widely.

To answer you now: I generally try to avoid pinning threads because as soon as you pin one, people ask you to pin others, and you can't pin everything. But more importantly, sometimes when you pin things to the top of a forum, it attracts attention initially, but then people become kind of blind to them -- the eye glosses over the pinned threads and looks for fresh content.

This is not really a problem for long-standing, informational threads, which you need to know are there, but don't need to read every day -- like Steve's ongoing fundraising thread in GD, or rules-and-regulations threads in some of the sub-forums. But it could be a problem for a thread in which the information changes and is updated regularly. So I thought the home page would be a better place to give the threads exposure. I was previously trying to include them roughly every ten days or so, but now we're in the home stretch, I'm going to try to include them daily.

I had many of the same thoughts when I made that post. I knew going in that posts are rarely pinned, and I wondered if people would even notice if it were. It's also time-limited, as you noted, so it's better to keep it visible through interaction. It just seemed like the perfect encapsulation of what DU can provide so I wanted it to get some love, and I'm glad it's getting further exposure.

Thanks for the follow-up.

Those were my exact thoughts, too.

After Election Day passes, all my posts will become moot, too.

I've phone banked, and canvassed in the past (but getting too old to go out alone). It makes me nervous. But I LOVE the post it idea. I also like to paint messages and pics on rocks and place them around town, telling people to keep them, or place them somewhere else where someone will find them; on a sidewalk, planter, park bench, etc.
Fun ideas!
Kudos to Wednesdays! I'm now inspired!

I've called on fellow DUers to carry my banner, posting my kind of threads in future elections, in case I ever disappear from DU. I'm sure I have a few years yet in me, but you never know, and I ain't getting any younger!

(Even now, I am sitting here recovering from a bout of COVID.)

Thanks in advance!

Think. Again.

A lot of effort goes into these and I consider these and OmahaSteve's posts to be top priority on DU, especially at this time.
