Let me see, a government controlled by elites who don't represent the majority of the population. An electoral system that has been compromised and is of questionable legitimacy. Powerful rich elites who live in gated communities controlling affairs. Crumbling infrastructure. Widespread poverty. Demonization and scapegoating of minorities. Shrinking opportunities for upward mobility. Delegitimization of the free press. Disinvestment in public education. Failure to respond adequately to natural disasters. No universal access to health care. Control of natural resources by powerful corporations. Tin pot dictator in charge. I don't know, I'm checking off a lot of boxes here.

(10,887 posts)Yep.
I felt this way when Bush was re-elected.
And its gotten worse.
53% of white women voted for Trump. That sealed it.
We are a horrible nation of people.

(1,896 posts)we were like a banana republic. If I described a country where the election for "el presidente" came down to a disputed vote in one of the provinces and that son of a former "el presdidente" was one of the candidates and the prefect of the province where the vote was disputed was that candidate's brother and "miraculously" the results came out in favor of the prefect's brother you would probably say that the election results weren't legitimate and we shouldn't recognize the government of that banana republic. It doesn't make it any different when you substitute the actual americanized terms for what really happened.

We as a country actually preferred Bush again. Pathetic.
