Each year, the editors at 24/7 Wall St. identify 10 American brands most likely to disappear. This year's list reflects the brutally competitive nature of certain industries and suggests what can happen to companies that fall behind in efficiency, innovation or financing.

The website takes a methodical approach in predicting which brands will disappear before the end of 2013, based on the following criteria:

•A rapid decline in sales, contributing to steep losses.
•Disclosures by the parent of a brand that it might go out of business.
•Rapidly rising costs that are unlikely to be recouped through higher prices.
•Companies that are sold.
•Companies that go into bankruptcy.
•Companies that have lost most of their customers.
•Operations with rapidly withering market shares.

When has they ever been accurate?

I remember RiteAid from a few years ago. Macy's too - they all survived.

Saab is gone now - true. Died December 19, 2011.

Office Depot is still around.
Dean Foods is still around
Frontier Airlines was spun off and sold again back to Denver stockholders - it still operates.
Sara Lee is still around - in fact, moved their HQ to Broomfield, Colorado and renamed Hillshire Brands
Borders shut down July 19, 2011
Gateway - Part of Acer - brand still exists
DollarThrifty - It's still up for sale - Hertz shows interest, but sounds like Dollar is still in business.
Answers.com - still alive
E*Trade - still alive


So two out of 10 is really a pisspoor predictor.

3. I expect Current TV not only to survive

but will expand and take over Fox network once Murdoch sells the entire thing for $1 to Al Gore, just before Murdoch enters prison.
