Glenn Greenwald Jokes about President Obama Raping a Nun

Glenn Greenwald Jokes about President Obama Raping a Nun

After President Obama signed the NDAA, Glenn Greenwald took to Twitter to highlight the ACLU's response statement. Blogger Angry Black Lady took issue with Greenwald and Emptywheel's characterization of the law.

When a Greenwald fan interjected with a horrific statement suggesting that Angry Black Lady would defend the president if he raped a nun on TV, Greenwald joined in and amplified that disgusting and offensive imagery instead of ignoring it or rebuking it.

A wide range of Twitter users were outraged at the offensive tweets about the president raping a nun, but Greenwald dodged accepting any responsibility for participating in such vile conversation, and several of Greenwald's most ardent admirers doubled down and insisted the statements were perfectly acceptable, while attacking Angry Black Lady for not being able to take a joke. Repellent.

You will find it in this paragraph:

"Worse still is the embrace of George W. Bush’s with-us-or-against-us mentality as the prism through which all political discussions are filtered. It’s literally impossible to discuss any of the candidates’ positions without having the simple-minded — who see all political issues exclusively as a Manichean struggle between the Big Bad Democrats and Good Kind Republicans or vice-versa — misapprehend “I agree with Candidate X’s position on Y” as “I support Candidate X for President” or “I disagree with Candidate X’s position on Y” as “I oppose Candidate X for President.” Even worse are the lying partisan enforcers who, like the Inquisitor Generals searching for any inkling of heresy, purposely distort any discrete praise for the Enemy as a general endorsement."

The word "simple-minded" is actually a link to a DU post, here's the link to the column:

For another, one of the problems we regular people have by posting here is knowing that someone else might read what we say here, and then give it more attention by putting it into the spotlight than what we originally planned for it to have.

It's about DC-centered Dem party insiders marginalizing every progressive voice that comes along & going out of their way to appease the RW. That seems to be the basic Obama Admin policy, and it's extended & dampened the recovery. Greenwald & others correctly criticize Obama for this and the many other non-progressive policies this admin has taken. We should recognize this and not just attack the messenger.

I thought that's what the discussion was about.

Anyway, I don't agree with any of your assessment of the Obama administration. But there won't be any mind changing going on either way, so I'll leave it at that.

As for Greenwald, he is not being "attacked" as the messenger of disagreement with Obama's policies.

I know you've seen the many threads on this topic. What is being brought to the fore is Greenwald's playing fast and loose with the facts, 'joking' about how Obama supporters would excuse Obama if he raped a nun, promoting the "good side" of a homophobic racist like Ron Paul - you're read the quotes cited (Greenwald's own words) as well as I have.

Perhaps people here are just piling on Greenwald because they want him to be "held accountable", make him a better journalist by "holding his feet to the fire" ... and so on.

Glenn Greenwald has never praised Ron Paul, he HAS pointed out the disturbing fact that some of Paul's positions on issues such as war and civil liberties are significantly to the left of all the other candidates, including Obama. Any "praise" has been focused on Ron Paul's opposition to certain long standing government policies, and has not been aimed at the man himself or any of his proposed solutions to those issues.

http://www.salon.com/2012/01/05/democratic_party_priorities/singleton/

He never joked about rape. In fact, it was just the opposite. If you look at the screen capture of the actual Twitter conversation, he flatly states that he was using rape to illustrate how extreme some of Obama's most ardent supporters can be.

His opinion about Citizen's United isn't nearly so simplistic as you attempt to make it.

As far as the "rape" discussion goes, I think his decision to piggyback on another Twitter user's comment, in what was a crude jibe aimed at a particular Obama supporter, was a mistake. He allowed the discussion to be hijacked and lost control of the argument. It was especially stupid given that he was debating with women at the time, so he should have expected that allowing rape into the conversation in such a fashion would cause a sh*tstorm.

By the time most of us reach adulthood, it is almost certain that we know at least one person who was the victim of a violent sexual crime. This personalizes discussions of rape for most people in a way that abstract discussions about children killed half a world away in unmanned drone strikes can never match. So long as the bloody costs of conflict don't touch the lives of the majority of voters, most will continue to value their economic well being over the blood and treasure expended in pursuit of empire. This is why Obama can joke about using unmanned drones to kill the Jonas bothers and effectively get away with it, but Glenn Greenwald cannot argue that even rape is not a "bridge to far" for a particularly zealous group of Obama supporters. It's not that rape isn't a deeply serious issue, or that the impersonal summary execution of children, even if accidental ...repeatedly "accidental"... is not arguably worse, it is that one falls within the bounds of human experience for many Americans and one does not. Whether it was intended or not, this has been made painfully apparent by the attempts to paint Glenn Greenwald as insensitive to women and "doubling down" on rape jokes. That he was discussing the degree to which the President has accrued vastly expanded, and clearly destructive, powers is completely lost, as was his obvious contention that even something as heinous as rape would be excused by those most in thrall to this President.

So, while it is almost incomprehensible that we live in a country that is virtually unmoved by the unlawful murder of thousands, many of whom are infants and school children, but that is driven into an uncontrollable rage over the mention of rape in a heated Twitter debate, that is where we are.

Welcome to the Internet.

When your idea of an "effective progressive" is hyping Ron Paul, I'd hate to see what you consider an ineffective progressive. And really, trying to spin some conspiracy theory out of this that Greenwald is being "sacrificed" to the right-wing? No, he's selling out to the right wing by kissing ass to Ron Paul, and for that he's meeting pushback from actual liberals who don't appreciate "liberal" plaudits for a right-wing hatemonger.

You're simply going to dismiss anything I have to say by retorting "Well, but Greenwald SAID Paul has some bad points! So you're lying!" Kind of like the way Greenwald dismisses Ron Paul's history of incredibly bigotry, including the most disgusting homophobia you've ever seen, in order to pump up his "anti imperialist" candidacy (even though Paul has openly supported attacking Iran).

He's always existed on the left edge of the American political spectrum but I wouldn't call him either popular among the public at large or particularly effective as he's never had a significant position in the political discourse.

From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glen_greenwald#Popularity

On August 24, 2008, the day before the start of the 2008 Democratic National Convention, which was held in Denver, Colorado, Dan Amira of New York magazine ranked Greenwald as number 36 in his list of "top 40" most popular American political pundits.

On January 22, 2009, Forbes named Greenwald one of the "25 Most Influential Liberals in the U.S. Media". The magazine placed him at number eighteen, just below Hendrik Hertzberg and just ahead of Andrew Sullivan.

On July 6, 2009, former MSNBC host Dan Abrams launched a new site, Mediaite, reporting on media figures. The site ranked all print and online columnists in America by influence. Greenwald was ranked # 9, immediately behind Charles Krauthammer.

In August 2009, the Web search engine Technorati ranked Glenn Greenwald's Salon.com blog as number 45 in its "Top 100" list of "the most popular 100 blogs based on Technorati Authority" (in its case, 2,056 blog links in the past six months).

In November 2009, The Atlantic launched a new site, TheAtlanticWire.com, and named America's 50 most influential political pundits ("The Atlantic 50" ). Greenwald was ranked #22 on the list.

In December, 2011, Business Insider named him one of the Politix 50: The Only Pundits You Need To Pay Attention To Between Now And The Election.

Seems popular enough to me, doesn't he?

And as to having his own words quoted: several the posts in this very thread have shown them to have been taken out of context & their meaning twisted beyond all recognition.

ggreenwald 21 hours ago

There is phony outrage here against Glenn Greenwald. He was responding to someone else's comment about rape, and he was in no way belittling rape. If fact the commentators relied on the seriousness of rape to make their points.

The comments appear to be in the context of AngryBlackLady defending many of the worst behaviors of Barrack Obama, and ridiculing his victims. Now people like AngryBlackLady, and much more importantly President Obama, should be what DU should save their outrage for. President Obama is the one that is conducting actual evil and criminal acts, including murdering children.

If you do not think you can change the system dramatically, at least advance issue and open up discussion, that was not done.

How many people people are aware of a comment made by Greenwald on Twitter? How many people will die or go bankrupt because we could not discuss a universal HC ssytem in order to protect the for profit system, which was already losing customers?

It's a political joke...
and pretty obviously was not meant to be taken literally or seriously. And it's not an analogy of rape, it's not a joke about rape, and it's not hyperbole about rape. It's also not an analogy of nuns, a joke about nuns, or hyperbole about nuns.

...bullshit!

Same old dirty tricks the rightwingers use, now coming to us on the 'left'.

Thankfully I see it is going nowhere except here unfortunately and on a few extremist obscure blogs that most people are familiar with and which have little if any credibility. Too bad it has been here though.

attempted smear campaign. And that particular blogger is deserves to be made fun of, considering her own habit of attacking anyone who does not march in lockstep with HER views.

I see the smear campaign has failed miserably anyhow, as I said earlier people are disgusted with this kind of online low level mindless garbage. I've never seen a post of GG's get so many recs. A statement of how sick and tired people are of these vile attacks on anyone who dares to disagree with them.

Comments from Greenwald later in this exchange:

@JamilSmith She defends assassinations, ridicules drone killing of children - he said: there's nothing you won't defend: even THIS
ggreenwald 21 hours ago

@mountain_goats @JamilSmith It wasn't a joke of any kind: it was a *deadly serious point* about blind defenders of evil acts - and it's TRUE
ggreenwald 21 hours ago

It's clear that it is the very evil of rape that made Greenwald's comments make any sense. This outrage against Greenwald is phony, and it strengthens Greenwald's point about supporters of Obama.

GG: No - she'd say it was justified & noble- that he only did it to teach us about the evils of rape.

He didn't say "rape is evil." He added that the Obama supporter would justify rape as "he only did it to teach us about the evils of rape"

No amount of spin can wash away the disgusting episode.

144. His problem is that he expects us to agree with his conclusions
Mon Jan 2, 2012, 02:13 PM
Jan 2012

He considers them unassailable.

He has dismissed the issue from debate. Said we must agree with him. If we do, then we will defend anything Obama does. But he's tried to shut the door on debating just exactly what the NDAA does. It's bad, dammit, and that issue is no longer open. Thus if you don't think the world is at end and our freedoms gone, you must be willing to support Obama no matter what he does.

Underlying that is the fact that people like him hate Obama and think therefore that there rest of us have to abandon our support of him. We have to not like something. We have to find something we can criticize, or we are blind worshippers. That's a duty Glen and his like invented for us, but they are starting to believe it.

"It is NOT a "rape metaphor": it's a statement they they'd defend ANY evil: assassinations, child-killings: EVEN rape"

"Yes, I think Obama defenders who justify assassinations, drone killing of children, etc. would justify ALL crimes"

"Let me be very clear: the point - which I affirm 100% - is that some people will justify the most HORRIFIC things he does"

Greenwald quotes from your link

http://chirpstory.com/li/3666

http://twitter.com/ggreenwald

Jokes about killing young boys with drones are so much better, unless your child was one of them.

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/44/2010/05/obama-drone-joke-was-it-offens.html

"Everyone agrees that President Obama was funnier than Jay Leno at the White House Correspondents Association dinner on Saturday night. But this joke is inspiring some backlash:

"Jonas Brothers are here, they're out there somewhere. Sasha and Malia are huge fans, but boys, don't get any ideas. Two words for you: predator drones. You will never see it coming. You think I'm joking?"

"You have to wonder why in the world the president's speech writers would think it was a good idea to throw a joke about predator drones into the president's speech during the White House Correspondent's Dinner, given that an estimated one-third of drone casualties, or between 289 and 378, have been civilians," wrote Adam Serwer at the American Prospect...

The joke mighta worked, and certainly would've been less offensive, coming from anyone else. It seems like a no-brainer that the people directly responsible for tragedies should not deliver jokes about those tragedies. That's why Mel Brooks can tell Hitler jokes and Germans can't..."

I posted here repeatedly: George Bush could ass fuck a Boy Scout on live TV and there would be some GOPers who would defend and justify it. Where was your "outrage" then? Hmmmmm? No one here gave shit about it, including YOU.

Guess what? The past 3 years have shown me that there are DEMOCRATS who fall into that "so and so can do no wrong" category. In fact, I see some of those folks every day right here on DU.

And it is sad, disgusting thing to witness. Far more offesive than any comment I ever made about George Bush and Boy Scouts, or any comment about Obama and nuns.
