https://www.care2.com/causes/olympic-athletes-save-pets-from-the-south-korean-dog-meat-trade.htmlMany of the millions of people watching the Winter Olympics this year may not know that South Korea is the only country in the world that breeds dogs - about 2.5 million each year specifically for human consumption, according to Humane Society International (HSI). There are thousands of farms across the country where dogs are raised in deplorable conditions and then brutally slaughtered for their meat.
This petition could use some DU love, folks

(30,481 posts)Meat eating is meat eating. Using dogs for food is simply not very efficient.

(94,550 posts)It's sole intent is to make people feel like they've "done something". No elected official is going to change their policy position based on a crowd-sourced online poll.
If you want a policy changed, close your web browser and write a letter in your own words explaining what you want and why.

He asked the houseboy to feed his dog, and an hour later the poor kid came back smiling proudly with the dog's parts on a platter ready for the oven.

(28,120 posts)Bayard has taken in more animals than anyone I know. She now has 23 cats (all were dumped on her property), 3 dogs, 2 horses, donkies, goats, chickens (for eggs to help feed the crew). ALL (except the chickens) are rescues which she pays out of her own pocket to neuter and feed. And talk about vet bills! Someone cannot take care of their animals, she takes them in.
I do not personally know anyone with a bigger heart for animals.
I hope to be posting more later in this thread.

(25,586 posts)who are arguably much smarter than dogs. From a strictly logical standpoint its either not okay to eat ANY animal or its perfectly acceptable to eat ANY animal.
Breaking animals into arbitrary categories based on perceived cuteness is absurd, and denigrating other cultures for not making such a frankly silly choice is simple bigotry.

I signed this, just as I have dozens of others in the past that opposed this heinous brutality.
There are good points made in this thread but they seem to be assuming that you're a carnivore who is only sensitive to dogs being killed! They don't know you, do they?
Why the hell, someone please tell me, do they continually pick on folks trying to do a good thing?! I've seen these attacks over and over on anyone who is trying to be a Good Samaritan to any species.
They should post to every thread in the lounge and in the Cooking & Baking forum that talks about MEAT.
Two things guide me in my choice of protein: how close the critter is to my own DNA but more importantly, how intelligent it is. Dogs are highly intelligent and sensitive and are closer to my DNA than other animals mentioned. Besides, my best friend ever was a dog!
I eat fish, seafood, eggs, & dairy products. I'm allergic to soy which somewhat limits my eating a strictly vegetarian diet. I use substitutes to satisfy my palette as best I can.
I intend to post more later.

(58,724 posts)If not, maybe consider why it's okay for some animals to be "raised in deplorable conditions and then brutally slaughtered for their meat" and not others.

(94,550 posts)Assuming you're not a holier-than-thou "I don't eat meat and neither should you" advocate, there's nothing but cultural heritage in determining what meat you should and should not eat.

(22,069 posts)Wow. Just wow. Guess I should have posted this in the Pets group, but I thought it would get empathy for these animals across the boards. I will cross-post.
Duppers, my dear friend, you are a darling for your posts.
Call me a bleeding heart liberal but I don't believe in hanging ANY live animal, and torturing it before slaughter. I petitioned for years about the remaining horse slaughter houses in this country, that would truck in animals, a lot off the tracks, some just plain stolen, jamming them all together in trucks......all sexes, many foals, injured. Dragged off the trailer with broken legs, other horrible injuries incurred in transit (they did finally determine this was bad for business). They were herded into areas where they were hung--alive--upside down by their feet, and their throats slit to bleed out. Usually screaming. The others would be screaming because they knew what was coming and could smell the blood. The meat went to Europe. Horse owners were terrified of their animals being stolen.....since they were going for 62 cents a pound. The BLM finally wised up to people adopting wild mustangs, and selling them for this purpose. Unfortunately, some animals are still going across the border to Canada and Mexico to meet the same fate.
We DID succeed in closing those slaughter houses, all thru public outcry. IT WORKS! It was determined that horses were highly intelligent COMPANION ANIMALS, not livestock for slaughter. (TRump is all for having them reopen.) Now....dogs are, hands down, the most beloved companion animals.
The guy that used to work on my tractor in CA, was looking at my pet Brahma steer (Cowster) one day, and said--you can't name an animal you're going to eat. Then you can't kill it. I assured him Cowster was not destined for the dinner table.

(22,069 posts)Its obvious these dogs would not be vaccinated or wormed--would taint the meat. But what kind of diseases/parasites are being passed on in that meat? It's certainly not regulated or inspected.

(4,921 posts)As noted above, these same people eat cows, pigs, chickens, etc. Meat is meat.
As a progressive, this seems like a time when we need to not push our culture on others. Let's take care of our own slaughterhouse deplorable conditions.
But, yeah, I get it; dogs are cute. So let's save them and then go eat some yummy bacon.
CrawlingChaos
(1,893 posts)I oppose the dog meat trade AND all the barbaric atrocities committed against other species. Focusing on dogs can be a way of getting people thinking about the horror involved in putting meat on their table. If they can begin to consider that cows, pigs, chickens, etc. are creatures who feel physical and emotional pain, just like dogs.
Some people will never care, to my great sorrow, but many will eventually have an epiphany.
Torturing animals should never be viewed as an acceptable part of anyone's culture. It's a disgusting stain on our own culture.

(16,804 posts)i do sympathize with the posters intent...I really do...
And i have worked over the past years to lower the amount of animal protein i consume....
what gives me paws at this moment is that latter today i need to go to the store and get more cat food for my feline family.
It is with some amusement that as i strive to eat less meat i look for cans of cat food with greater meat content...
ironic?

(16,386 posts)Things I learned:
1. Unless you are a vegan, you're not allowed to have the opinion dogs are sub-optimal food sources for a host of reasons.
2. Americans, even those who donate their time, sweat, blood and money to stopping whaling, poaching of elephants, tigers and rhinos in other countries where it is acceptable, should just shut the fuck up and stop trying to impose their will on people as these animals are slaughtered into extinction because hey, tiger bones are great for boner problems.

(6,796 posts)I believe we should do all we can to help. I, too, have rescued and taken care of forgotten animals. Our animals are given the best care. It is the least we can do. What I will not do is join the harpy choir of those who screech at us because we do not save all animals. We save what we can whether it be in Korea or here. I wonder if the sanctimonious naysayers actually put forth any effort, time, or money to save anything. Seems like they think not eating meat is enough effort. Keep up the good fight Bayard, you are not alone. Side note: each time I wrote your name, it came out Bacardi. Perhaps a sign we should have a rum toast to each other.
