Is the CD about to go the way of the cassette and the 8-Track?
Best Buy will pull compact discs from their stores by July 1, according to Billboard.
And the retailer may just be the first domino to fall.
CD sales were down 18.5 percent last year in the U.S., which is driving some of these decisions. Target is moving toward selling CDs on a consignment basis, the journal reports.

Meanwhile, Best Buy says it will continue to carry vinyl for the next two years, which suggests CDs may have some future life. After all, few expected vinyl to come back a decade ago.

(22,990 posts)New Best Buys used to put nearby(same parking lot, other side of a Ruby Tuesday or homologous franchise) Kemp Mill Records locations out of business because Best Buy's CDs were a buck or three cheaper.
The last Kemp Mill Records location closed in 2017, and this year Best Buy abandons CDs altogether.

(21,506 posts)Best buy has been wasting space for at least two years or whenever spotify hit the US.
Thumb drives are faster and streaming music services killed the need to buy music.

(23,968 posts)in a lot of places they are the only electronics store choice aside from online. Might be hard to kill them off because of that.

(11,119 posts)I bought a flatscreen TV from Best Buy @ Ebay last year.
Also, I ordered cap, scarf and glove give sets for family members at Walmart online and I received my order by mail from a Mom&Pop Shop from upstate New York... Every Sam's Club or Walmart that closes means even more $ for Walmart as long as folks shop online...

(65,180 posts)I can't download it all to my computer, so not sure the CD will ever truly die for me. I rarely buy new CDs anymore, however. I download on iTunes. I prefer that to streaming services because I only need access to music I want.
they will become increasingly hard to find though.

(34,505 posts)Because transfers to new computers sometimes lose paid for albums. I like having the CDs. Theyre like having an external hard drive, and dont take up much space.

He said they'd always stay in business and he'd have a job for life.

(903 posts)It's mostly just mainstream stuff. I understand why they have the inventory they do, but it's no comparison to the excellent record stores I used to shop at in Boston in the 90s.
I still want physical media. I guess I'm just weird that way. I buy CDs, vinyl, even an occasional reel-to-reel tape. I do most of my purchases on ebay. In many cases, I can get a used CD that's in great shape for much less than buying it new. And, it feels like a form of recycling.

(903 posts)I think some of their business practices have been fairly shady. I used to buy from them a lot, but now I look for independent retailers. Often, you can find the same retailers on ebay and amazon, and sometimes you can find their websites and buy from them direct.
I also have a pretty good local record store. Their selection isn't what I wish it were, but I definitely buy from them when I can.

Barnes&Noble website could use a LOT of improvement. But I'm fine with reading reviews of the books I want on Amazon before buying them on B&N.
