My late father was Conservative, and he would be disgusted by what has happened to his Republican party. He was a WWII Navy vet and a truly good man. At one point he had a signed photo of GWB on his desk. It disappeared one day and I never asked why. But I was glad to see it go.

They just believed the government wasn't the best way to accomplish them. They thought local charities were a more efficient way of helping the poor, or that making life easier for business would lead to more jobs, and so on. They had a set of principles and a serious argument about why they were right. You could disagree with them, but truly hating them was hard as long as they really did want to make the country a better place.

To paraphrase something I heard somebody say once, those guys didn't leave the Republican Party. The Republican Party left them.

My father believed in honesty in government and was opposed to World War II. I can't say I agree with everything he believed, but he was sincere and decent. He was gravely disappointed in Richard Nixon. Though he continued to vote in every election, he never canvassed for any candidate again. For a long time, he was a precinct captain in our small town, but I think he felt betrayed by his party after William Stratton and Richard Nixon.
