https://www.mediaite.com/tv/michael-steele-confronts-matt-schlapp-over-cpac-officials-racial-insult-what-the-hell/Former RNC Chairman Michael Steele got heated confronting ACU Chairman Matt Schlapp today after a CPAC official blithely insulted him last night.
Ian Walters said in front of a crowd of people last night, We elected Mike Steele as chairman because he was a black guy, that was the wrong thing to do.
An incensed Steele told Schlapp that it continues to dismay him to see people in the GOP saying things like this. Schlapp acknowledged it was not a great moment, but he argued out to Steele that hes taken his share of potshots at Republicans and that maybe there were other issues people had with his chairman ship.
Steele responded, What the hell does my race have to do with any of that, at the end of the day? What does the color of my skin have to do with anything you just said?

STEELE: Ive spent 41 years in this party. 41. All right? Ive taken crap you have no idea about, and Ive carried this baggage. And for him to stand on that stage and denigrate my service to this party, and for you as a friend to sit there and go, Well, youve been critical of this party. Theres only one word I can say, and I cant say it on this air.
SCHLAPP: Say it.
STEELE: No, I cant. Because the FCC wont allow it.

(82,849 posts)3. You know, Michael, your political affiliation is a choice
You say for 41 years you've put up with a lot of nonsense. No one has forced you to keep hitting your hand with that hammer. Is the money that good?

(5,969 posts)5. There seems to be sincere disbelief and frustration on Steele's part
The remark was highly offensive and racist. You can see the disbelief in him when he is told to be graceful and forgiving about it without holding the offending party really accountable.

the ones who were in power at the time.
Also, sorry, I can think of only one black Republican in high office - senator Tim Scott. Would have been interesting to take his thought.
