all of our doors are locked and we are holding class as normal.
There was credible threat made on Social Media and students saw something and said something. It is working like it is supposed to do.
Some students choose not to come to school, some are here and doing their best. No one is freaking and everyone is working.
and NO I am not armed.
My kids and I have a plan A, B and C!!!

(58,648 posts)Hopefully the threat turns out to be nothing, or that it is neutralized peacefully, at least.

(26,260 posts)I'm watching the local coverage for the shooting at Central Michigan University, right now. The police are saying it is a "domestic situation" and the victims were not students. The shooter is still on the loose, although they have identified him.

(28,394 posts)It seems like every day there is a threat to a local district around here, causing closures, early dismissals, and evacuations. It must be really difficult to continue with lessons and curriculum under such stressful conditions.
A lot of it is being caused by students who think it's some kind of lark. I hope they are prosecuted and their parents have to pay expenses.

(9,580 posts)It is horrifying what we have become. Why schools? Why the hell are they doing this to children?

(6,241 posts)Kids that are bullied, like Cruz, will try to hurt the people that hurt them. That means the other kids in his class.
It's as good reason as any to eliminate bullying. You don't know if the kid that's being picked on will accept it, will fight back, will kill himself, or will bring a weapon to school and kill as many people as he can.
Schools will ignore bullying, but punish the victim for fighting back. The bullies will usually do pretty much anything they want. This is isolating to victims. When the school will not only not help you, but actually makes things worse by helping the bully, you quickly lose respect for everyone, and see everyone as your enemy. Helplessness leads to anger, anger leads to violence.
One of my bullies in junior high ended up with a broken arm. But it could have gotten much worse.

(47,419 posts)I've encountered many that I can't figure out. Sometimes, it is like a different language. Personally, I like words and rarely use acronyms. I think the ghosts of many English teachers are hovering over me at times.

(3,424 posts)I am 68 and we went through some tough hell in the 1960s, but never did we live in fear of our lives to go to school! I feel so bad for kids now. And the teachers and all involved.

(31,997 posts)the threat was taken care of and some students will be expelled. Many other students either did not come or went home as soon as they knew what was going on.
The principal called staff and parents through the tree and made a statement about the situation and that everything was okay and students would be safe at school.
I will tell you even though we teachers taught and acted like normal, we all breathed a sigh of relief at the end of the day with no incidents.
It did awaken many teachers about locking doors and covering windows from classroom to hallway.
I have always locked my door and once shut, we can get out but not just anyone can walk in. Many teachers in my hall started doing the same.
The student teacher across the hall was probably the most nervous of the bunch of us. The veterans assured her all day long. I have no doubt she will be ready to teach in any situation after today.
