(22,035 posts)My father did his post-graduate studies in The Netherlands in the mid-1950s in the city of Delft. The little house my parents rented was across a pond from the university. During the winter, my dad would ice-skate across the pond to go to classes. He had these old ice skates that were kind of like the old metal roller skates (the ones with a key) that he could clamp onto his shoes. Years later, when he and I went there on a vacation trip, he showed me the pond and I was quite surprised to see that the pond was nearly a mile across.
