Or thereabouts.
If Trump is still in office and it seems likely that he'll face a real threat for the GOP nomination, Pence will have to decide whether he'll keep pretending to be loyal, or if he'll jump into the primaries.
If he makes the first choice and Trump loses the nomination, then if the Democrats win the White House, Pence can come back four years later.
But someone else wins the GOP nomination and then wins the election, Pence will be done for.

(52,206 posts)In any scenario in which Donnie runs for the republican nomination and is beatable, pence is too closely linked to Donnie to win it himself.
So either Donnie doesnt run at all for one reason or any other, in which case pence easily can run on his own, or Donnie is running, in which case pence is stuck with him.
One more possibility. Donnie runs but kicks pence to the curb. In that case, pence can run on his own but hed lose easily.

(26,044 posts)I disagree with your last conclusion -- if Pence stays on and Trump wins, he'll be the heir apparent in the minds of the Repug establishment. Even if Trump loses, he'll be a front-runner for 2024, as it's common for a V.P. to get the nod in those cases.
The one possible roadblock to that scenario would be if Trump, God forbid, wins reelection and then decides he wants Ivanka to be his successor. In which case...
