(42,002 posts)I have seen the woman/creature story SO many times. I adored Gill Man as a kid, but except for the beauty of the creature it just didnt seem original.
But I did enjoy it.

The focus on the movie is the lead actress and the actions she takes in this flick...thats what makes it unique from Creature from the Black Lagoon or any other creature feature of that time.
No, it isnt original, but the story itself with its focus of the female protagonist was original.

(6,139 posts)but the presentation is! The way this movie presented inequality including gender, sexuality, race and disability was innovative - subtle and powerfully effective. And thats the real story and message of this movie - good people do not discriminate.

(16,900 posts)No...Creature from the Black Lagoon isnt original...what was original in this story was the highlighting of female power, gender equality, and female sexuality....

(40,245 posts)There are common ideas and tropes that are universal and seen over and over again in literature and film. Ideas and tropes can not be copywrited and these cases are not easily proven.
Can one say that this movie is too similar to a mid 80's film called "Starman" starring Jeff Bridges as an alien who crash lands in Wisconsin and finds help from a lonely young and pretty widow? There is the 'falling in love" with a non-human, the bad guys from the secret government agency who want to capture him and study him, the mad rush to help him escape to the place where he can return safely to his own environment. These are not ideas any one writer can own.
Does having an injured cat or a record player in a movie amount to plagiarism? I think it is going to be a tough case.

(1,580 posts)By the way, "Starman" is a film I really enjoyed. I may hunt it down and watch it again.

(2,404 posts)To win tonight.
I think he is the greatest actor of our era.
I think he would have tied for the most Oscars had he won.
