We already have elections coming up for countless legislative and other races in 2018. There will be ample time to talk about who should run for President for the Democratic Party following that mid-term election.
So, let's focus on winning back congressional and state legislative majorities this year, and worry about the Presidential election after this November's elections. We need all of our energy devoted to this year's races in every district and state.
Please. Thanks.

(7,349 posts)Damn, have been saying this for way too long.....if we don't take back control our chances for 2020 are null and void....
Yet, the battles over previous elections and the one too far away to even give credence to, are argued endlessly.....
Focus on Midterms and GOTV!!!
Thank you, MM!

(86,006 posts)...I'm always amused by folks who think DU is some sort of remote control to the elections.
Besides, the 2020 contest has already begun. I'm not understanding why we should sit on our hands about that presidential contest when Trump is already on the road campaigning for the job.
It's not as if both can't exist here at the same time, and I'm sure they will.

(146,336 posts)I see more Bernie Sanders threads than threads about any midterm races. I want to hear from people about their own congressional and state legislative races. I want to see enthusiasm for the midterms. We'll be having presidential primaries in due time. Let whoever wants to run put their names forward for those.
We can decide who is our nominee in the 2018 primaries. For now, who's running for Congress in your state? I have no idea. Let's hear about that, OK?

I don't think these scolding threads, complaining about stuff posted you're not interested in, get you anywhere closer to what you want.

(7,349 posts)Randy Bryce, Randy Bryce, Randy Bryce!
He's running against Paul Ryan and deserves more focus than any discussion of 2020, imo.....
MineralMan
(146,336 posts)It's worth a shot, I believe. But, if we ignore it, or think it's unwinnable, while looking beyond 2018, we miss a huge opportunity to activate voters in Ryan's district. Why would we do that?
Thank you for this excellent example of 2018 issues we should be focusing on.

(7,349 posts)I will obnoxiously be promoting Randy Bryce for the months to come!
We also are going to have a gubernatorial race to outseat Walker....that's huge in WI as well!

(146,336 posts)with information on how we can help. We have an opportunity in 2018 to do a great deal, if we can manage to energize Democratic voters in a way we don't usually for mid-term elections.
For me, that is the real thing we should be promoting. Getting out the Democratic vote in numbers that break records will do more than anything else we could possibly do, and in every state and district. We could win races nobody would believe could be won.

(7,349 posts)and it amazes me the negative responses I get re; "we have elections in our state as well, why should I donate (which is what Randy Bryce needs the most currently) to your state?"
Well, if you hate Paul Ryan, isn't that reason enough?
MineralMan
(146,336 posts)I have precious little money to donate in the first place. However, I can see no benefit in being negative about other races. I can't see any way that is beneficial. I'll be following the campaign in Ryan's district. If I can possibly help, I will.

(3,568 posts)with the same tiresome cast of characters. If you've ever, in the past year and a half, read a post with the word "Bernie" in it there's no need to read another. They all immediately devolve into the same damn thing, same people, same complaints, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end, amen.

(42,388 posts)I'm very concerned about voter suppression in November. Getting in a left v left 2020 war could do just that.
I recall how the negativity by some on the left toward the ACA caused a weak midterm turnnout. I fear some want that to happen again.
MineralMan
(146,336 posts)A huge turnout can beat the pants of suppression attempts.
We cannot let negativity toward Democrats drive down voter enthusiasm. I will fight that here and everywhere I can.

(999 posts)I am doing everything I can to ensure that we defeat Barbara Comstock in November. I am also making sure that Tim Kaine is reelected as well. The GOP is going to nominate someone who is farther right than Atiitla the Hun. Good thing is Kaine always runs scared so he will take any candidate seriously. 2020 is not on my radar screen yet. Het the House back and you stop the flow of money into the wrong places.

And about voter turnout and registration. GOTV!

(53,061 posts)First issue is the importance of building group cohesion, if goes back to FDR/TRUMAN/LBJ. it's an essential element to building long term trust, especially among communities that don't feel included.
Why are you against the value of group solidarity and mutual support?
sharedvalues
(6,916 posts)For example: registering voters. Working on turnout. Telling friends and family that Fox and Limbaugh lie to them to get votes for billionaires. Marching. Calling Senators and Reps.
Let's all focus on those things. The best resistance is positive persistence.
