Dear America: Come on, you cant be serious.
The ongoing saga over a president, a porn star and a payoff is so lewd and tawdry that it cant simply be added to the ever-expanding list of horrible misbehaviors of a womanizing misogynist.
Its not even the infidelity that most bothers me. I view that as an issue between spouses and with the other person involved. I contend that we on the outside never really know what understandings may exist in a marriage, unless the two parties within reveal it.
In this case, Melania knew exactly the kind of man she was getting.
When Donald first meets Melania, they are at a New York Fashion Week party to which Donald has been invited by the wealthy Italian businessman who brought Melania to America on a modeling contract and work visa. According to GQ, sometimes, to promote his models, the businessman would send a few girls to an event and invite photographers, producers, and rich playboys.

but, if she is, in fact, his handler, as many suspect, none of this is surprising, and she will not leave.

Melania knew what kind of man Trump was when she married him. She made a deal.
In fact, I don't feel anything about her other than a big... whatever. She's almost irrelevant. I write "almost" because if she's pissed at Trump, that will make his life even more miserable and I can enjoy that. But she's not the entree. That's all Trump.
Trump's profound corruption and criminality is coming to light. Robert Mueller is going to become an incredibly important person in the history of the U.S. If he does his job right, future historians may regard him as a re-Founding Father.

(3,635 posts)and GQ is a respected magazine, known for their style.
There are many issues with Melania - birtherism, hypocrisy regarding her immigration, hitching herself to a fascist for wealth/power, etc - but her career as a model/pinup is not one of them, IMO.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)extremely sexist. Most men who have choices, and women, give serious priority to income when considering a mate. A hostile mind could choose to believe most men and women prostitute themselves. But I wouldn't.
Of course the life this woman would have with Trump mattered as long as she stayed with him given a reported whopper of a prenup. She was 35 and he still a decent looking 58 or so when they married.
But take a look at this. These are Melania's parents. Note a certain resemblance? Reportedly, her father is a boisterous, rather trumpish man in personality also.
arthritisR_US
(7,300 posts)through chained migration (in GOPig terms) the hypocrisy never ends.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)about them. Most anyway. They just don't have the liberal problem of thinking that what is right for them should be right for everyone. Very much to the contrary, and our inability to understand why that is so is a big part of why they see us as intractably stupid and our preaching insufferably sanctimonious.

(33,449 posts)More likely is that Melania is depressed, filled with regret and resentment. It oozes out of her.

(42,023 posts)Charles Blow puts it very well. There is no way she doesnt understand the kind of man she married. Her marriage is her business. However when she, in a position of power, supports a disgusting bigot, a self-confessed sexual assaulter and a hypocrite who promotes policies that harm everything from girls and women to the entire planet, who she is and what she does becomes my business.

Bird in a Gilded Cage--1899--Arthur Lamb
The ballroom was filled with fashion's throng,
It shone with a thousand lights,
And there was a woman who passed along,
The fairest of all the sights,
A girl to her lover then softly sighed,
There's riches at her command;
But she married for wealth, not for love, he cried,
Though she lives in a mansion grand.
CHORUS
She's only a bird in a gilded cage,
A beautiful sight to see,
You may think she's happy and free from care,
She's not, though she seems to be,
'Tis sad when you think of her wasted life,
For youth cannot mate with age,
And her beauty was sold,
For an old man's gold,
She's a bird in a gilded cage.

She did not come here on a work visa. As a matter-of-fact, she was forbidden to work in this country on the type of visa she was issued.

To what specific end?
Last year, you yourself said politics is a dirty game and that rules are for the weak... or was that merely situational ethics wholly dependent on what particular narrative of yours it either reinforces or denies?
