When did republicans start caring about homeless people?

Yes, homelessness here in California is bad and highly visible. Housing is expensive and people are being squeezed out.

It’s not like the republicans are actually going to do anything about it, like pushing for a livable minimum wage or low income housing, but it sure makes for good visuals for right wing meme generators.

Lately some of my right wing Facebook friends like to post memes with a photo of a homeless tent camp with a caption which suggests how terrible things must be in California when people have to live like this.

You would think I’d be desensitized to republican hypocrisy by now.

And ignoring the fact that California gets a lot of out-of-state homeless who migrate due to the temperate weather, temporary/seasonal work, and tourists.

Red states have just as much local homelessness as California does - they just criminalize most of it, and their governments don't care who freezes to death in the winter because they can't pay for heating.

He's either a rare avis - a true "olde tyme" republican who has local interests at heart - or the typical weathervane opportunist that can use the GOP as a political stepping stone.
Either way, there are factions in the GOP that are trying to groom him for state and national office as a potential "crossover" attractor for the more socially liberal-independent voters.
